Blatná Polianka: Hotels and the birdlife of Senianske rybníky

Blatná Polianka is closely associated with the wetlands and birdlife of Senianske rybníky. The Senianske rybníky National Nature Reserve encompasses the cadastral area of Blatná Polianka. As a result, nature observation, historical traces and designated recreational opportunities come together in the area around the village.

Nature

The national nature reserve protects rare aquatic biocoenoses and waterbirds. It lies on an important migration route for waterbirds and waders and serves as a resting area for them. The Senianske rybníky Special Protection Area is also located near Blatná Polianka and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. Blatná Polianka is one of its cadastral areas; in Slovakia, the area is considered one of the three most important breeding grounds for purple herons, little egrets, great egrets, Eurasian spoonbills, black-crowned night herons, great bitterns, western marsh harriers, whiskered terns and pied avocets.

The figures illustrate the biological diversity of this area: 295 bird species have been recorded in the Senianske rybníky Special Protection Area and its wider surroundings, and breeding has been confirmed for 125 species. In addition, the Special Protection Area is the only regular breeding site for the Eurasian spoonbill in Slovakia. The Senné Fish-ponds wetland, which includes Blatná Polianka among its cadastral areas, comprises seasonally flooded grasslands, shrub swamps and 28 fishponds. This wetland also lies on an important migration route for waterbirds.

History

In addition to its natural areas, Blatná Polianka has a documented history supported by written and archaeological evidence. Archaeological remains dating from the 9th to the 11th century have been found in the area. The first written mention of Blatná Polianka dates from 1417. The village has a Reformed church built in 1906 and restored in 1931.

The village’s history also includes the former livelihood of its inhabitants. This was based on agriculture and, in particular, fishing. This tradition is reflected in the two fish depicted in the municipal coat of arms.

Outdoors

The Náučný chodník Vtáčím rajom nature trail can be accessed from Blatná Polianka. The route is designated as an easy, 15-kilometre trail accessible year-round. The trail features observation towers suitable for viewing the landscape and birds.

Recreational fishing is permitted in the Senianske rybníky area, which includes Blatná Polianka among its cadastral areas. The Nová zem Ranch is located at the end of Blatná Polianka, near Senianske rybníky. The ranch offers visitors horseback rides. It also provides facilities for school trips, corporate events, family celebrations and campfires.
