Jedľové Kostoľany – Hotels, Nature and Culture

Nature

Jedľové Kostoľany is a foothill municipality on the southern slope of the Tríbeč Mountains and the northern slopes of Pohronský Inovec, in the upper reaches of the Žitava River. Between Drienová and Razdiel lies the deep Hlboká valley. The vegetation in the surrounding area is characterised by thermophilous Pannonian flora and gradually transitions into the vegetation of the higher-elevation areas of Tríbeč and Pohronský Inovec.

Mallards, swans, herons, and white and black storks occur along the surrounding waterways and ponds. Three ponds with a total area of 96 ares are located near the Rybníky forester’s lodge. In the areas of Tríbeč and Pohronský Inovec, 30 fully or partially protected plant species also grow.

Another distinctive natural feature is the Horné Lúčno Cave. The old shaft cave lies at an elevation of 560 m and was formed by the collapse of the ceiling of a karstified fissure. It is located about 100 m above the Horné Lúčno settlement at the foot of Skalka, and is 16 m deep and 40 m long.

Hiking

A green-marked hiking trail leads from the Dedina district in the municipality via Veľká Lehota and the hut below Vojšín to Nová Baňa. The red-marked Ponitrianska magistrála also passes through Kostoľany. It runs along the ridge of Tríbeč, past Hrušov, and continues via Veľké Pole to Vtáčnik.

Culture

Two singing ensembles are active in Jedľové Kostoľany. Their repertoires also include traditional Kostolian songs, helping preserve them for future generations. Local culture also includes the “deväťpukový” cashmere costume. It uses fabric printed with a rose surrounded by nine unopened rosebuds.

On a hill above Jedľové Kostoľany stands the Classicist Roman Catholic Church of All Saints, dating from 1332 and built in 1796–1797. It contains a late Baroque All Saints altarpiece from the 1790s, as well as a Classicist stone baptismal font from the late 18th century with wood carvings on its side panels.

Nearby are the ruins of Živánska veža, approximately 1.5 km east of Jedľové Kostoľany, above a state road that passes through the municipality’s cadastral area. The construction of Živánska veža is dated to the last quarter of the 13th century and may be connected with the establishment of the nearby Hrušov Castle, whose construction was initiated by the Čákovci family.
