Velčice: Culture and Nature between Tribeč and Žitavská pahorkatina
Velčice lies in the valley of the Čerešňový potok at the intersection of the Tribeč Mountains and the Žitavská pahorkatina. The Church of the Holy Trinity was probably built at the end of the 13th century; its frescoes date from the second half of the 15th century.
Culture
The Church of the Holy Trinity and numerous monuments located within it were entered in the state register of immovable cultural monuments in 1965 and 1968. Another significant testament lies on Veľký Tribeč: the archaeological hillfort is located in the cadastral territories of Velčice and Kovarce. Its monumental defensive walls and the remains of entrance gates have been preserved; the hillfort’s settlement dates approximately to the 9th to 8th centuries BC.
Below Svinec stands the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Seven Sorrows of Mary. It was built from 1740 to 1743 and contains a polychrome statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. The chapel also has a reliquary of the Holy Cross brought from Rome in 1748.
The history of Huta above Velčice is also part of the town’s cultural heritage. A glassworks was founded there in the 1830s. It mainly produced hollow glass, including bottles, glasses and measuring vessels in various colours.
Nature
A larger part of the cadastral territory of Velčice lies in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, where the second level of nature protection applies. At the Pod cerami site, Velčické cery is a protected natural monument and a group of old, mighty Turkey oaks.
Above Velčice there are a reservoir and a fallow deer enclosure. Eight protected plant species and more than 20 protected animal species occur in the natural landscape of Velčice. The landscape thus extends from protected groups of trees to the habitats in which these plant and animal species occur.
