Martin Nad Žitavou: Discover Hotels and Local Culture

Martin nad Žitavou reveals its character through different forms of local life: sacred architecture, preserved memory, regional music, nature and active leisure. As a result, the focus is not only on individual sights, but also on the stories, events and places that shape community life.

Culture

The Kostol sv. Martina church is single-nave and has a square presbytery, a flat ceiling and an attached sacristy. The church itself has no tower. Behind the main altar is a late Baroque painting depicting the death of Saint Martin. The architectural heritage also includes the masonry Neo-Baroque bell tower of Martin nad Žitavou. It dates from 1890 and is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund (ÚZPF SR) under number 1546/2.

History and Community

The Pamätná izba našich predkov documents the history of life and events in Martin nad Žitavou. Objects and photographs were collected for this purpose with the support of local residents. The collection is currently housed in storage due to lack of space; at the same time, new premises are being sought for its reopening.

The Pelúsok folklore group is also one of the visible expressions of local cultural life. It rehearsed the singing of regional folk songs and performed at various important local events, including in the local church.

Local Life

The programme for the Martin nad Žitavou Community Days 2026 included the popular goulash-cooking competition “Martinská vareška” as its 3rd edition. The start was scheduled for 12:00. The date and its designation as the planned third edition are therefore explicitly part of this year’s programme.

Nature

The Tríbeč Natura 2000 site consists mainly of deciduous forests. It regularly provides a habitat for the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), the European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) and the European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), as well as other forest bird species.

Active Outdoors

A new street workout area is located in the Sever residential zone behind the cemetery. The area is equipped with certified workout elements and provides a safe and accessible space for sports and active leisure for all age groups.

For cycling trips, cycle route 2106 “Okruh Zlaté Moravce – Zlatno – Ladice” is listed. It begins in the centre of Zlaté Moravce and splits into a circuit in the municipality of Martin nad Žitavou.
