Štrbské Pleso – Hotels, Mountain Lake and Winter Sports

Štrbské Pleso combines a distinctive mountain lake with nature, culture and winter sports. The namesake lake, Štrbské pleso, is the second-largest mountain lake in the Slovak part of the High Tatras. The town is part of Tatra National Park (TANAP), Slovakia’s oldest national park.

Nature and History

The Štrbské Pleso educational trail covers local history, flora and fauna, notable figures who worked here, sporting activities and the history of the spa. It features 40 stylish wooden information panels in Slovak and English. The educational trail is accessible and open year-round. The Jazierka lásky ponds also have a historical connection: they were originally known as Štrbské rybníky fishponds and were used by Jozef Szentiványi to breed trout. The Skokanské mostíky ski jumps acquired their current form during preparations for the 1970 World Ski Championships.

Educational Trails and Paths

A fitness and oxygen trail approximately 2.2 kilometres long, with six stations, runs around Štrbské pleso. Another educational trail leads from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso and back. It has 14 stations and provides information about the plant and animal species in the surrounding area, as well as the formation of the Tatras and their geology. The route begins in Štrbské Pleso and remains open in winter; when there is snow, hikers are redirected onto a winter route.

Winter

The Štrbské Pleso ski area offers nine kilometres of easy, gentle slopes as well as intermediate pistes. A ski touring route begins at the lower station of the chairlift to Solisko and follows yellow markings to the foot of the Skok waterfall. Another winter activity is a 100-metre-long snow tubing track.

The cross-country skiing area near Štrbské Pleso comprises eight trails ranging from 1.4 to 5 kilometres in length. It has a visitor tent, a buffet, a ski school, as well as ski services and equipment rental. The range of trail lengths describes different route distances within the same cross-country skiing area.

Getting There

The Tatra Electric Railway connects Poprad Tatry, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso. The rack railway connects Tatranská Štrba with Štrbské Pleso and has been in operation since 1896. By car, Štrbské Pleso can be reached via a nearby exit from the D1 motorway. The two rail connections therefore refer to different starting points: the Tatra Electric Railway provides the connection via Poprad Tatry and Starý Smokovec, while the rack railway links Tatranská Štrba with Štrbské Pleso.
