Drienica – Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture in the Čergov Mountains

The cadastral area of Drienica lies beneath the southern slopes of the Čergov Mountains and ranges in elevation from 375 to 1,068 m.

Nature

Drienica has 601.78 hectares of forest. The cadastral area belongs to the Čergov Special Protection Area, a 35,849.71-hectare bird protection area. The Čergov Special Protection Area serves to protect habitats of bird species of European importance as well as habitats of migratory bird species.

Hiking Trails

The recommended Okruh Besná circular route is 5.5 km long, with a stated walking time of 2:02 hours. The blue-marked hiking trail 2845 runs through the cadastral area of the municipality of Drienica from Škola v prírode Drienica via the Besná saddle to Podbaranie. The green-marked hiking trail 5708 leads from Sabinov via Červená voda and Lysá to the Čergov saddle and onwards to Hertník. Cycling

The cycle path along the Drienický potok Šomka stream is 946 m long and 2.5 m wide; it is illuminated and marked for traffic purposes. The newly built cycle path is intended for cyclists and pedestrians. Its length, width and designated user groups provide specific points of comparison for the cycle path. The measurements stand alongside its lighting, marking and intended use by two groups.

Culture

The Chrám Narodenia Presvätej Bohorodičky was completed in 1811 and dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The single-nave building has an entrance tower incorporated into the gable façade. The Kaplnka sv. Jána Evanjelistu was built in 1822 and extensively restored in 1998–1999. From 2000 onwards, the tradition of May liturgies, combined with the blessing of the fields, was revived in the Kaplnka sv. Jána Evanjelistu.
