Discover Sabinov: hotels between urban history and nature

Sabinov combines visible urban history with natural and leisure destinations. In the historic centre, the Gothic Roman Catholic church dedicated to St John the Baptist shapes the townscape. Its main altar is considered the most valuable piece. The city fortifications from the 15th and 16th centuries are also among Sabinov’s most significant monuments.

Culture

While walking through Sabinov’s historic town centre, around Námestie slobody and through the adjoining romantic alleyways, visitors can see bastions and walls of the former city fortifications. Several burgher houses, originally built in the Renaissance and Baroque styles, stand on the square. Sabinov’s sights also include the Piarist Grammar School and the Renaissance bell tower.

Sabinov’s Cultural Information Centre is located in a former burgher house at Námestie slobody 62 and provides visitors with information and promotional materials. A permanent exhibition on the Oscar-winning film Obchod na korze is also housed there. The Czechoslovak film was shot in Sabinov and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966. The museum also features the exhibition V PAMÄTI NAPÍSANÉ. It is dedicated to the treasures of the historic libraries and archives of the former free royal town of Sabinov. A permanent exhibition of the Krajské múzeum presents representative collection objects relating to the history of the town of Sabinov.

The Mestské kultúrne stredisko Sabinov develops regional folk traditions through folk groups, performances and showcases. In this way, the town’s cultural offering includes not only buildings and museum exhibitions but also living cultural forms.

Nature

Lesopark Švabľovka is an urban forest and recreation zone for walks and active recreation in nature. In this forest park, a wooden observation tower stands at Šanca, offering a beautiful view of Sabinov and the surrounding area. The revitalised Hradobná ulička is intended for walks, cycling trips and recreation along the historic fortification walls.

Leisure

Mestské kúpalisko Sabinov has a children’s pool, a 25-metre leisure pool and a 50-metre swimming pool. The complex also includes a beach volleyball court, badminton courts, an area with a table tennis table and a children’s playground. Water facilities therefore stand alongside various sports and play options.

Events and cuisine

Sabinov Town Days with the Market of Sabinov take place every year in June. At the Sabinovský jarmok, snacks and products for sale include langos, gyros, trdelník, mead and cheese.
