Snina: Manor House, Cycling Route and Sninské rybníky

Snina combines visibly preserved cultural history with cycling and hiking routes, as well as the green pond landscape of Sninské rybníky. Between the manor house, historical traces and natural areas, there are various themes that can be described specifically.

Culture

The Neoclassical manor house in Snina is at the heart of the town’s cultural history. It was built in 1781 on the site of an earlier wooden structure. Today, the manor house contains museum exhibits and gallery exhibitions, including the “Ozveny Sniny” exhibition. The restored manor house was ceremonially opened to the public on 5 July 2013 during celebrations marking the 1,150th anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius.

Another historical trace is the “Sninská úzkokoľajová lesná dráha (S.U.L.D.)”. It was used to transport timber from the Vihorlat Mountains to a local sawmill in Snina; its tracks had a gauge of 760 mm. Several culverts and bridges from its original route have survived to this day.

Cycling routes

The 10-kilometre urban cycling route “Za históriou Sniny” leads through the history of Snina via nine stops. Along the way, it provides information about the town’s historical, cultural and natural monuments. The route is described as easy and is also suitable for active recreation for families with children. The cycling trip “Snina – Sninské rybníky – Biele kamene” begins in Snina and leads to the popular Sninské rybníky recreational area. From Sninské rybníky, the cycling trip continues along forest paths towards Biele kamene. Thus, in addition to the historic town route, there are also paths connected with the landscape around the ponds.

Ponds and forests

The Mlynisko ponds, surrounded by greenery, provide refuge for various species of waterfowl and other fauna. The Mlynisko pond is also used for sport fishing. Sninské rybníky provide an environment for walks and picnics combined with mushroom picking.

The forests around Sninské rybníky consist predominantly of mixed woodland and offer favourable conditions for mushroom growth from spring to late autumn. Mushroom picking at Sninské rybníky offers the opportunity to gather fresh mushrooms for culinary preparation. Thus, this landscape area combines nature observation, physical activity and a specific connection to regional cuisine, without needing to name different areas for this purpose.

Hiking

For hikers, the moderately difficult “Snina – Sninský kameň” route is one clearly defined option: it is 8.9 km long. In addition, the tourist information centre provides up-to-date information about hiking trails, cycling routes, natural monuments and attractions in the region.
