Stropkov: Hotel, Church Tower and Town History

In the center of Stropkov stands the Church of Najsvätejšieho Tela Pána on a slight elevation within the grounds of the former castle. This brings several historical references together directly in the town’s history: the parish church is attributed to the 14th century, while the prominent church tower and Kaštieľ Stropkov make different chapters in the town’s development visible.

Culture and History

Among the medieval furnishings of the Church of Najsvätejšieho Tela Pána is a Gothic monstrance from 1527. On the south side of the church rises the imposing, seven-story rectangular church tower, built in the Renaissance style in 1593. The combination of an older parish church, a medieval furnishing and a later Renaissance building makes the ensemble’s chronological depth legible, without the individual structures belonging to the same era.

A viewing platform in the Stropkov church tower is located at a height of just under 30 meters and offers views of the surrounding area. Tickets for the church tower are available at the Stropkov Tourist Information Center in the town hall, Hlavná 38/2, or online at www.veza.stropkov.sk. The town hall address and the online option are just as much part of the practical information as the specific vantage point in the tower.

The historical heritage also includes Kaštieľ Stropkov. It is the last surviving secular part of the former town castle. The medieval town castle to which Kaštieľ Stropkov belongs was built by the Peréňovci in the 15th century. The ground floor and attic of Kaštieľ are used for museum purposes. Thus, the preserved architectural connection to the former castle stands alongside the present-day use of specific parts of the building.

Nature and Events

Alongside the historical sites, Park zvierat offers an area whose entire grounds are barrier-free. Public access to Park zvierat began on May 11, 2020. Both statements refer respectively to the grounds as a whole and to the beginning of their public accessibility.

A separate local event is the Stredoveký festival in Stropkov. It includes food and drink stalls.
