Giraltovce: Hotels, Culture, Nature and Riverside Trails

Giraltovce lies at the confluence of the Topľa and Radomka rivers. The town brings together riverside landscapes, paths through varied terrain and tangible evidence of regional cultural history. There are also event venues, sports facilities, and walking and circular routes with clearly stated lengths and durations.

Culture

A cultural focal point is Park Mieru. In 2026, it hosted the Topľa Valley Folklore Festival for the 33rd time. The park’s amphitheater provides space for large music events and festivals. The Protestant church is also one of Giraltovce’s notable historic buildings: it was built between 1650 and 1654 with a tower, extensively rebuilt, extended and enlarged in 1798. The Renaissance tower of the church was restored in 1810.

The Giraltovce Jewish cemetery lies on a hill within the town and was established in 1862. It contains approximately 100 gravestones, most of them made of sandstone and granite. A Holocaust memorial was erected in the cemetery in 2008. It lists the Jewish families who lived in Giraltovce until 1942.

The literary competition Hlovíkova litera is also named after the writer and Protestant pastor Adam Hlovík, who worked in Giraltovce for many years. In this way, sacred architectural history, Jewish remembrance and literary cultural heritage stand side by side in different forms.

Nature

The municipal area shows a distinct change in terrain. Its western part is flat, while the eastern part is gently undulating to more varied. The Radomka Nature Reserve is located in the surroundings of Giraltovce. It protects natural meadow and fen communities in floodplain meadows along the Radomka stream.

Herons, gulls, fish and amphibians can be observed on the Rybník circular trail; aquatic and marsh plants are also found there. The walking path along the Topľa offers riverside vegetation, wild ducks, fish and fishing spots.

Trails and Leisure

The Rybník circular trail follows Ulica kpt. Nálepku and a field path along the Radomka and a stream. It is 4 km long and takes about 3 hours. The walking path along the Topľa leads from the former tannery across the dam and along the riverside path to the edge of Giraltovce. It is 3 km long and takes about 2 hours.

A longer route is the CHPR Radomka circular trail. It crosses a stream and leads across wet meadows and pastures; it is 6 km long and takes about 4 hours. Tennis courts and a beach volleyball court can be rented in Giraltovce for active leisure activities.

Fishing permits can be purchased every Friday during office hours, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the office of MO SRZ Giraltovce.
