Culture and History

The SNM Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník documents the fundamental stages of the cultural-historical and socioeconomic development of Ukrainians in Slovakia. The cultural-historical exhibition also provides an overview of the settlement, economic, social, national, and cultural-historical development of the Ukrainian people from the earliest times to the present day.

The Dezider Milly Gallery is located in an 18th-century Baroque mansion in Svidník. It presents the development of Ukrainian folk and professional art in Slovakia from the 16th century to the present day. The gallery includes an icon collection that is among the oldest and most valuable holdings of the Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník.

The open-air ethnographic exhibition of the SNM Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník covers 11 hectares and includes around 50 examples of folk architecture. Since 1986, traditional folkloric and ethnographic celebrations have been held there under the name “Poklady ľudu”.

The Svidník branch of the Military Historical Institute is dedicated to the military history of Slovakia from the period immediately before and during the First World War, through the interwar period, to the Second World War, with a focus on the course of the Carpathian-Dukla operation. The Soviet Army Monument, together with the adjacent military cemetery, forms a distinctive ensemble of the Dukla battlefield in the Svidník area.

In Bodružal, the Greek Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, together with seven other wooden churches of the Carpathian Arc. The church dates from 1658 and is a three-part log structure with a richly articulated shingle roof and three towers rising toward the west.

Aquaruthenia in Svidník offers wellness and leisure activities year-round. These include six saunas, a family pool, a relaxation pool, a massage pool, a salt cave, a Kneipp water trail, and children’s attractions.

The Day of Folk Traditions and Pierogi at the Svidník open-air museum takes place annually and was held for the 30th time in 2025 as part of the Slovak Days of European Heritage. At the pierogi festival in Svidník, visitors can watch the preparation of this traditional dish live; pierogi are considered a local rustic specialty.

Nature and Trails

The Dukla Forest Park in Svidník offers a 1.2-kilometer small circular trail and a large circular trail of approximately 2.2 kilometers. Information boards provide information about regional wildlife, trees, plants, fungi, and birds.

The observation tower with accommodation above Svidník is easily accessible year-round for hikers, cyclists, and cross-country skiers. Families with children and older visitors are also mentioned. In the Roztoky Dark Sky Park, an observatory offers opportunities for short and multi-day observation stays, as well as one of the most powerful telescopes in Slovakia.

The long-distance hiking trail “Cesta hrdinov SNP” continues via Svidník to Dukla. The “Kapišovská Slučka” is a 12.7-kilometer, less demanding circular cycling route that starts in Svidník, passes the statue of Army General L. Svoboda, runs toward the Vyšný Komárnik border crossing, and continues to Kapišová. The “Okolo Hvezdárne” cycling route is a challenging 31.2-kilometer circular route that starts in Svidník and leads via Nižný Orlík, Vyšný Orlík, and Nižný Mirošov to Roztoky.
