Celje Castle is Slovenia’s largest medieval castle and one of the city’s best-known landmarks. The historic city centre contains the remains of an ancient Roman road; it also includes medieval towers and a significant architectural heritage.

Culture and History

Visitors to Celje Castle can explore Friderik Tower, exhibitions and the remains of the castle halls, as well as take part in guided tours. The permanent exhibition “The Counts of Celje” is located in the Princely Palace. It is also home to “Celeia – a town beneath today’s town”, the largest presentation to date of the remains of Roman Celeia preserved on site.

The Celje Regional Museum presents archaeological, historical and art-historical collections from prehistory to the First World War. Another stop is Stari Pisker, a memorial site and an off-site unit of the Museum of Recent History Celje. The museum section focuses on 35 original farewell letters from hostages from the Celje area. Advance registration is required for visits, as the memorial rooms are located in a prison that is still in operation.

Exhibitions and Memorial Sites

The permanent exhibition “Living in Celje” tells the story of the city and its residents in the 20th century. It includes a reconstructed city street with craft businesses and workshops where master craftspeople occasionally give demonstrations. Herman's Den is a children's museum and a space for children's creative activities.

The original Photo House Pelikan from 1899 is designated as a cultural monument and is located on Razlagova Street as an outpost of the Celje Museum of Recent History. The upper floor contains a skylight studio where photographs can still be taken; it is one of the few studios of this kind in Europe. Marijino znamenje was Celje’s first public monument and was erected in 1776.

In Pečovnik, the Alma Karlin Memorial House was renovated and opened as a publicly accessible memorial house in 2014. It houses the exhibition “Alma M. Karlin's Lonely Journey” and hosts numerous cultural events, including the Summer in Celje festival. The Centre for Contemporary Arts manages the Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art and accepts registrations for guided tours of current exhibitions.

Nature and Trails

The Celje City Forest comprises seven recreational trails designed around experiences and one educational and experiential trail. The Celje City Forest Treehouse is open to individual visitors and groups. Workshops, concerts and poetry readings are frequently held there.

Celjska Koča is a hill and recreational area accessible on foot, by bicycle or by car. The area around Celjska Koča has well-maintained hiking and cycling trails, an adventure park and a summer toboggan run. The Celjska Koča zip line is described as one of the longest in Slovenia. Below Osenica Hill are the “Celje trails” downhill mountain biking routes.
