Celje Castle is the largest medieval castle in Slovenia. During the warmer months, it hosts living history programmes with cultural and historical societies from across Slovenia. On Jožefov hrib, the Celje Calvary consists of four of the originally five chapels and a Golgotha group.

History and Culture

The Princely Palace, Knežji dvor, was built on Roman foundations. In its basement rooms, visitors can experience the largest in situ presentation of remains of Roman Celeia, covering more than 1,000 m².

The Stara grofija is a Renaissance palace and houses the Celje Regional Museum. The Celje Ceiling is a rare example of secular illusionistic painting in Slovenia.

The Early Christian baptistery is a rarely preserved and confirmed example of Late Antique sacred architecture in Slovenia. It has been prepared as an archaeological monument and gives visitors insight into one of the oldest proofs of Christianity in Slovenia.

The Celje archaeological site traces the development of the city from the Celtic settlement of Keleia to the Roman municipium Claudia Celeia. Part of the site is open to the public through the “Mesto pod mestom” exhibition, where visitors can see ancient roads, mosaics and architecture.

The house in Pečovnik has been open as the Alma M. Karlin Memorial House since 2014 and presents the permanent exhibition “The Lonely Journey of Alma M. Karlin”. Visitors can see authentic living quarters, personal belongings, photographs and documents there.

The U4 Artists’ District is a creative area with ten artists and a gallery run by artists. Photo House Pelikan dates from 1899 and is an outpost of the Museum of Recent History Celje. A skylight studio has been preserved in the building, where photography can still take place. The “V gosteh pri fotografu Pelikanu” programme includes portrait photography in the glass photo studio.

Nature and Activity

Celjska Koča offers a ski resort and a toboggan run in winter. In summer, Celjska Koča has numerous hiking and cycling trails. The “Celjski dirkač” summer bobkart toboggan run at Celjska Koča is 800 m long.

Celje City Forest has 14 km of well-maintained hiking trails. The treehouse in Celje City Forest offers creative workshops, concerts, poetry evenings and exhibitions.

The cycle connection from Celje to Laško starts at the park-and-ride car park. Most of the 12 km cycle connection from Celje to Laško runs along a cycle path on the left bank of the Savinja.

The area around the City Municipality of Celje includes Mount Tolsti Vrh, Mount Kjumberk and Mount Gozdnik, as well as the peak of Sv. Uršula.

Celje railway station is located near the old town. Celje’s Centralka city card and app combines payment of parking fees, the purchase of public transport tickets and bicycle rental.
