Štore: Hotels, Hiking Trails and Cultural History

Štore can be discovered through specific routes and places. The Po Štorah hiking network comprises eight variants of varying length and difficulty for walkers, hikers, nature lovers, groups, families and individual visitors. The hiking trail combines nature and recreation and leads visitors to the natural features of the surrounding area. Numbered signposts and 53 orientation boards accompany the route, along with benches and five rest areas.

Nature and Exercise

There is also a clearly designated place for sporting activities: the Športna dvorana Štore Green Steel has three playing fields and an eleven-metre-high climbing wall. Badminton, handball, football, volleyball, basketball and sport climbing are available there. In a natural setting, the Kozolec Pečovje–Laška vas provides space for picnics and social events.

The Kolesarska povezava Celje–Štore–Šentjur is 11.6 kilometres long and runs along the Voglajna for almost its entire length. The state cycling connection includes four new bridges over the Hudinja and Voglajna rivers and the Žikovski potok. Another specific place to stay is the Domačija and organic farm Artišek in Ogorevc, with a designated motorhome pitch and a room for social gatherings.

Culture and History

The Church of Marije Snežne stands in Svetina, a Gothic fortified church from the late 15th century. Inside are a late Gothic painting of Mary and Jesus, a Marian throne dating from 1700, a painting of the Nativity of Mary and a Baroque organ.

The Church of sv. Lovrenca stands on the edge of the village of Kompole and is surrounded by a cemetery. The noble Saiffner family had it built in the second half of the 14th century; it was first mentioned in writing in 1525. The Church of sv. Janeza Krstnika stands on a hill in Šentjanž nad Štorami, near the local road to Svetina. The surviving tower of the former Prežin manor serves as the church’s bell tower.

Svetina is a compact settlement situated at an elevation of 683 metres in the hills. Written records date back to the Middle Ages, while the first entry in the Celje land register dates from 1480. Šentoščeva nedelja includes traditional customs such as gathering greenery, weaving wreaths, putting up a maypole, baking potica and other pastries, and a procession with the Marian throne. The cemetery in Svetina is also home to the grave of the writer and world traveller Alma Karlin.

Crafts and Rural Heritage

Lončarstvo Buser has a 220-year tradition of producing pottery. Visitors can tour the pottery workshop, kiln and entire production process, as well as watch clay vessels being made on the potter’s wheel. The visit includes a shop and a permanent collection of ethnological heritage.

At the Kmetija »Pri starem mlinu«, visitors can use a forest trail, a Kneipp trail and an energy trail. They can also watch grain being milled with a water wheel or with a horse-powered Gepl. The completely renovated Kmetija preserves its old style and includes, in addition to the house and stables, an old kozolec dating from 1891 and a mill with a water wheel.

Industry and Local Life

The Železarski muzej Štore in Teharje presents the development of Štore and the surrounding places from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. The museum preserves the industrial heritage of the ironworks in the form of documents, photographs, plans and objects.

Almini dnevi is held in Svetina as a gathering of world travellers. The Občinski bazar društev includes tastings and goulash. An annual wild garlic gathering event takes place in Štore, organised by the Turistično društvo Štore.
