Komarna Vas – Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Kočevar Settlements

Komarna Vas is one of the starting points of the Circular Hiking Trail of the Partisan Hospitals. This easy, marked hiking trail follows paths, logging tracks and forest roads past numerous natural and cultural features, especially water springs. Komarna Vas lies on the foothills of Kočevski Rog.

The Fox Trail passes Komarna Vas, Sveta Marija and the Zgornji Hrastnik Partisan Hospital. It also leads to the Resa clearing, where a forestry hut stands, and onward to the Črmošnjiške debele jelke, described in the route description as the thickest fir tree in Slovenia. Remains of a forest railway built for transporting timber can also be found along the Fox Trail.

Several cycling routes differ considerably in length and difficulty rating. The Wolf Trail is 24.4 km long and rated as an easy cycling route. Gas na Gače is a 9.8 km cycling route that passes Komarna Vas and the old, abandoned Kočevar settlement of Štale. The Bear Trail is a challenging 33.6 km cycling route; it starts at the Gače car park and passes a farm in Komarna Vas.

The Lynx Trail is 23 km long and rated as an easy cycling route. It passes through Komarna Vas and continues to the abandoned Kočevar settlement of Ponikve. At RTC Gače, adults and children can rent electric bicycles for cycling tours on the forest roads of Kočevski Rog. As recorded in the trail register on 28 October 2017, the Komarna vas–Gače trail was listed as an easy trail with a section length of 2,485 metres.

Above Komarna Vas, on a slope above the abandoned village, stand the ruins of the Church of the Virgin Mary Queen of All Saints. The church was recorded in 1741 as Mary's Church and as the old shrine of All Saints; it burned down in May 1942. Komarna Vas is one of the nine Kočevar settlements currently listed in the area of the Municipality of Semič.

Gače Adventure Park offers climbing courses and adventure challenges suitable for children and families. A short footpath leads from the car park below the ski centre to Gače Adventure Park. The Gače ski area has two cross-country ski trails and a toboggan run.
