Grosuplje: Nature, Trails and Culture
Grosuplje combines historical heritage with karst landscapes, marked trails and local events. Tabor nad Cerovim is one of the best-preserved anti-Ottoman fortifications in Slovenia.
Culture
The defensive wall of Tabor nad Cerovim is open for visits according to a schedule. The complex includes a museum room in the northwest tower and the Church of St Nicholas.
In the surroundings of Grosuplje, the area of Magdalenska gora was continuously inhabited from the Early Iron Age through the Celtic invasion and into the period of Roman occupation. The 28 clearly visible burial mounds on Magdalenska gora bear witness to more than 1,000 years of settlement.
The Koželj Beekeeping Museum in Šmarje–Sap presents beekeeping literature from 1700 to the present day. The exhibition includes various types of beehives, different honey extractors, as well as beekeeping tools and historical equipment.
Nature
Radensko polje Landscape Park lies in the southeast of the Municipality of Grosuplje. The karst field, covering slightly more than 4 km², comprises a natural landscape of meadows, shrubs, forests and periodically flooded lakes.
Radensko polje is also an important biodiversity hotspot with dry and wet grasslands, riparian forest, remnants of a peat bog, as well as aquatic, riparian and forest vegetation.
The landscape park offers opportunities for walking, running, cycling and horseback riding. The 5.2-kilometre Kingfisher Nature Trail leads from the village of Cerovo to Log along the edge of the forest, across wet meadows, through the hamlet of Podlom and to the source of the PodlomÅ¡Äica stream.
The Žabja hiÅ¡a Nature Conservation Centre is the first of its kind in Slovenia. It is located in Mala RaÄna on an island directly next to the source of the Å ica karst watercourse.
Žabja hiša offers self-guided visits, guided tours and workshops about Radensko polje.
Trails
KoÅ¡Äakov hrib, also known as Brinjski hrib, is a 409-metre-high elevation about 0.5 kilometres north of the centre of Grosuplje. Several starting points and trails lead to KoÅ¡Äakov hrib.
A marked access trail of the European long-distance hiking trail E6 to Tabor nad Cerovim begins in Grosuplje.
The Grosupeljska družinska kolesarska pot is 20 kilometres long, mostly flat and has only one short, gentle climb. It starts at the Tourist Information Centre in Grosuplje and returns there.
The Grosupeljska planinska pot is approximately 80 kilometres long and can be divided into sections depending on fitness and available time. Since 2015, it has been marked as a multi-use trail and is also open to mountain bikers.
In the surroundings of Grosuplje, Županova jama offers seven underground chambers richly decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as 600 metres of developed cave paths.
The Po sledeh starodavnih Ilirov cycling tour is challenging, runs along Radensko polje and through higher-elevation settlements, and offers views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.
The Pozdrav netopirjem v Županovi jami cycling tour is somewhat more challenging, leads through varied terrain and offers impressive views of nature. The different route lengths, terrain types and activity types can be compared directly for your own planning.
Events
VeÄer pod lipo is a traditional event organised by the Zveza kulturnih druÅ¡tev Grosuplje, bringing together choirs and vocal groups from the Municipality of Grosuplje. In recent years, it has been held at Kulturni dom Grosuplje.
Grosuplje v jeseni is a traditional festival in the centre of Grosuplje. The festival includes stalls, workshops and culinary offerings.
VodomÄev festival is a traditional event for children and adults. The programme includes guided tours of VodomÄev gaj.
VodomÄev festival also includes the Ptica na dlani experience, where visitors can observe bird ringing at close range.
Local
At Mestna tržnica Grosuplje, local seasonal food can be purchased directly from vendors every Saturday morning.
