In Ponikve, the Rašica disappears into a system of ponors. The Rašica Ponor in Ponikve is designated as a natural monument and lies along a municipal hiking route.

Nature and Water

Marketova jama in Ponikve opens into a mostly dry riverbed and is connected to the underground course of the Rašica. During high water, the Rašica extends its above-ground course through a dry riverbed to the settlement of Predstruge. Thus, the underground watercourse, ponor and periodically above-ground riverbed are among Ponikve’s specific landscape features.

Culture

Domačija Gačnik and Ponikve is a well-preserved group of buildings consisting of a house and a mill on the Rašica; it bears the year 1833. The Kapelica Gospe zdravja in Ponikve was built in 1935 according to a design by the architect Jože Brodnik from Kompolje in the Plečnik style. Brdavsov Mill, also called “Ta novi maln”, was built in 1870 by Janez Adamič and stood immediately next to the Pasnica Ponor in Ponikve.

The built heritage also includes the Brinski skedenj near the Cerkev sv. Florjana, with carved wooden columns from the second half of the 19th century, as well as Kolenčeva hiša in Ponikve, with finely crafted and preserved ceiling beams. The Cerkev sv. Florjana in the centre of Ponikve is a Gothic church with golden Baroque altars and a vault painting by Postl.

Customs

Ponikovske mačkare is a carnival custom with elements of folk theatre in Ponikve in Dobrepolje. The custom includes a house-to-house procession every year on Shrove Tuesday.
