Knežak lies on the southern edge of a karst field in Upper Pivka and at an important crossing from the Snežnik forests and the Pivka to the Reka Valley. The road from Pivka to Ilirska Bistrica runs through the town; in Knežak, a road also branches off towards Mašun. Abundant water sources influenced settlement as early as prehistoric times. The tectonic window in Selo is considered an important natural attraction in Knežak.

Culture

Several sites in Knežak are associated with sacred and local history. On the main road, the Cuckova Homestead is designated as a cultural monument because of its ethnological, cultural, artistic and architectural features. Knežak is home to the restored Church of the Assumption of Mary, with a Gothic presbytery and murals by Avgust Černigoj. The Church of St Barbara stands in the cemetery. Next to this church is a restored monument with the family crypt of Miroslav Vilhar and his family.

East of Knežak, on the Obroba hill, lies a prehistoric hillfort with a necropolis. The remains of Kalc Castle, with a round tower and a linden avenue, can also be found near Knežak. Miroslav Vilhar, known as a poet, composer and politician, lived there.

History

Earlier forms of rural life are also connected with the town. Horse breeding was particularly important in Knežak’s former rural economy. The Mihljeva steam bakery operated from 1925 to 1995 and was known for its bread and potica. Alongside the historic buildings, these craft and agricultural connections are also reflected in the townscape of Knežak.

Experiences

The Vilhar Educational Trail leads towards Kalc Castle and includes a visit to the Vilhar crypt in the Knežak cemetery. For younger children, the trail is designed with puzzles, listening activities, singing and games. A walk along the “Beu Kamn” educational trail led to the area in front of the Toneta Tomšiča Primary School in Knežak.

Konji na Bregu offers riding holidays tailored to the needs of individuals and groups and organizes guided rides with licensed local guides. At the Slavec Farm, visitors can learn about goat’s milk ice cream, cured ham and other sausages, as well as homemade pasta; the animals living on the farm are also part of the offering.

Two concerts of the Primorska poje choral revue are traditionally dedicated to Jasen and Knežak. The traditional Christmas concert in Knežak takes place in a festively decorated church and brings numerous visitors together through music and the spoken word.
