Mereče: Kettejeva Trail, Carnival and Local History
Mereče combines nature, customs and local history. Walks in the countryside, carnival traditions and the memory of events from the 20th century give the village a variety of facets.
Culture
The Podstenjski fj'htarji consist of 28 figures: 22 wear wooden masks, while six appear unmasked. On Carnival Saturday, the Podstenjski fj'htarji also collect gifts in Mereče. Mereče is classified as settlement heritage.
Nature
The Kettejeva Trail passes through Mereče. It is 9 km long in one direction and is an easy, marked hiking trail. The Kettejev pohod takes place every year on Slovenian Culture Day, 8 February.
Mereče also offers opportunities for walks in nature: alongside babbling streams, in the fresh air and among spruce and oak trees. In front of Sobe Kranjec in Mereče there is a fountain with natural spring water.
History
The local history of Mereče is connected with momentous events. On 4 June 1942, more than 30 people were killed and more than 460 people were deported to internment. Mereče was one of seven villages that were burned down by fascist forces on the same day.
On 4 June, a Brkini Partisan patrol attacked an Italian military garrison in Mereče. The municipal holiday of the Municipality of Ilirska Bistrica commemorates this tragic event. Mereče is also home to “Grob pri železniškem mostu”, the grave of a German soldier from the 97th Army Corps who fell in early May 1945. The chronology distinguishes the events of 4 June 1942 from the later grave site: the killings, deportations, burning of the seven villages and attack on the Italian garrison all took place on the same date, while the German soldier fell in early May 1945. The historical sites and commemorative references mentioned in Mereče thus span the period from 4 June 1942 to early May 1945.
For a stay in Mereče, you can compare hotel offers on the offer pages. You should also pay attention to which services are included, which price components make up the total amount and which booking or cancellation conditions apply. The specific features and terms are set out in each individual offer. When reviewing individual offers, you can also compare the exact location designation, the stated type of accommodation and the occupancy. It is also relevant whether services are expressly included or charged separately. Reviewing the total price should make clear which price components are already included and which additional costs are stated in the offer. It is likewise worth checking the deadlines and conditions for changes or cancellation, insofar as these are listed on the respective offer page. This keeps the comparison limited to verifiable offer data, without attributing unsubstantiated characteristics of individual accommodations to the village.
