Žabnica – Hotels, Sorško polje and Roman traces

Žabnica lies on the western edge of Sorško polje, halfway between Kranj and Škofja Loka.

Culture

The Church of St. Urh was built in 1851 on the site of the old church on piles because the ground was swampy and soft. Its large wooden altar is in the Byzantine style and was made in 1862 by M. Tomc from Ljubljana. A Roman gravestone is built into the church's bell tower. A depiction of a soldier, discovered during the restoration of the church in 1993, is now located beneath the bell tower. The Church of St. Urh in Žabnica is listed as a sacred architectural monument under the designation EŠD 2711. In front of the Church of St. Urh in Žabnica, an asphalt parking lot was built and drainage installed in 2018 and 2019.

The Roman past is also connected with specific finds: remains of a Roman rural estate were found in Žabnica. The Roman archaeological finds in Žabnica attest to settlement as early as the late Roman period. The Žabnica - Villa rustica in Žabnica archaeological monument area is listed under the designation EŠD 5571. In addition, the Žabnica - Domačija Žabnica 5 group of secular architectural monuments is listed under the designation EŠD 21676.

History

The central monument to those who fell in Žabnica was unveiled on 4 July 1957 at a crossroads in the village beside the road from Kranj to Škofja Loka. A commemorative plaque on the house at Žabnica 42 marks the place where the first meeting of the Žabnica Liberation Front took place in December 1941.

Sorško polje is characterized by isolated trees, especially linden trees, traditional hayracks and plague shrines.

Cycling routes

The cycling loop around Sorško polje connects Medvode, Kranj and Škofja Loka. The flat cycling route towards Ljubljana meets this loop in Žabnica.
