Kokra: Water, Trails and History in the Valley

Vobenca Waterfall is 20 metres high and lies at an elevation of 846 metres. It is also known by the names Lobnica and Lobinca. The wild streams in the upper and middle sections of the Kokra are part of the Natura 2000 network and are under special nature protection. This section is mainly home to native brown trout and introduced rainbow trout; further downstream towards Kranj, grayling and chub can also be found. Fly-fishing with an artificial fly is permitted in Kokra.

Trails through the valley and mountain landscape

The described access route to Vobenca Waterfall begins in Zgornja Kokra and follows the streambed without a path, crossing the stream several times. To take the route to the Dolga Njiva mountain pasture, turn towards Spodnja Kokra at the road markers between 10.5 and 10 kilometres, follow the signs towards the Roblek farm and park in a medium-sized car park. The route passes below an extensive rockfall and then reaches the broad mountain pastures of Dolga Njiva.

The hiking trail to the Čemšenik Hut begins at the entrance to Kokra; vehicles can be parked on the right-hand side by the transformer or at the bus stop in Kokra. The panoramic trail below Javorov vrh in the Kokra Valley offers views of Krvavec, the Ljubljana Plain, Grintovec, Kočna and the Julian Alps. At the Čemšenik Hut, its signs point east. The route to the Suhadolnik and Cojz huts begins at a turn-off in Kokra towards the Suhadolnik farm; the car can be parked below the farm.

History and local culture

The first section of the historic freight route from Možjanca to Kokra ends in the village of Kokra. It is 7 kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours on foot and has an elevation gain of 500 metres. The historic freight route follows a path along which iron and sea salt were transported from Kranj through the Kokra Valley to Železna Kapla in the 14th century.

In its second section, the historic Kokra–Celar Bridge freight route passes the Church of Mary Immaculate and the schools in the centre of Kokra. It runs along the eastern slope above the valley of the Kokra, one of Slovenia’s cleanest and most pristine waterways. The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Kokra is a Baroque pilgrimage church and was consecrated in 1802.

A pilgrimage of reconciliation followed an almost 40-kilometre circular route from Preddvor via Možjanca, Kokra, Sv. Jakob, Sv. Miklavž nad Mačami, Sv. Lovrenc nad Bašljem, Bela, Breg and Tupaliče back to Preddvor. At Semenj v Kokri, members of the Kokra Tourist Association traditionally prepared walnut štruklji, game goulash and Kranjska sausages on a wood-fired stove. Bike blessings are recorded in Kokra for the years 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
