Mlaka pri Kranju: Nature and trails around Udin boršt
Mlaka pri Kranju lies on the eastern side of Udin boršt, and the pine forest extends right up to the houses. From Mlaka, you can reach Udin boršt Landscape Park. It lies on an Ice Age terrace made of limestone conglomerate and is one of the last contiguous lowland forest areas in central Slovenia. As a result, specific natural and landscape areas meet in and around the town, reflected in various trail options and historical traces.
Nature
In Mlaka, the underground geomorphological natural feature Hišarjevo brezno is protected within Udin Boršt. The landscape park itself forms the larger natural area. The Mammoth Trail reaches Mlaka pri Kranju, where it leads into Udin boršt Landscape Park. There, it follows a forest path where visitors can observe birds as well as other animals and plants.
The shorter variant of the Mammoth Trail is 7 km long and leads from the Mercator store via Bobovek directly to Mlaka, where the forest path runs through Udin Forest. Via Mlaka, you can reach Udin boršt Landscape Park, which offers numerous trails for hiking, cycling and jogging.
Cycling
The moderately difficult Preddvor–Kranj–Preddvor gravel-bike route runs for 25.9 kilometres through Mlaka pri Kranju. In addition, the Karavanke Cycling Loops run through Udin boršt and Mlaka pri Kranju. These loops are also suitable for families, as they mostly run along cycle paths, cart tracks and roads with lighter traffic. The landscape park also has numerous cycling trails.
Culture
Local history is also reflected in named sites and routes. In Mlaka pri Kranju, the Obveščevalna točka Poljana is a memorial heritage site. Two Old Slavic graves were discovered on a hill near Mlaka pri Kranju. The Rokovnjaška Route passes several farms that visitors can explore in greater detail with the help of a guide.
A memorial plaque was unveiled at Pestotnikova ulica 3 in Mlaka pri Kranju to commemorate a secret weapons and ammunition depot used by militia units. In 1990–1991, the married couple Klemenčič stored weapons and ammunition belonging to militia units in their home in Mlaka pri Kranju. In winter, thick ice was sawn into pieces in Mlaka and transported to dairies and a brewery in Kranj.
