Šenčur: Culture, Nature and Cycling
In the centre of Šenčur stands the Church of St George, which was built in 1747 in the Baroque style on the site of an older church. Behind the church, part of an anti-Ottoman defensive wall has been preserved. The church is part of a protected cultural monument of artistic and historical importance, which also includes the remains of the former fortifications, as well as the vicarage and the chaplain’s house.
Culture
The townscape also includes a monument to the potato and Maria Theresa, which stands in the centre of Šenčur. Blagnetova hiša is also located there. The building was reconstructed to reflect its former appearance, while part of the town’s cultural heritage was retained in the new building.
The Šenčur Museum features a permanent exhibition on ceramics in Slovenia and also hosts monthly exhibitions. It offers creative workshops, including model-making workshops. The “Slovenija v malem” exhibition extends over two floors and features more than 20 models and dioramas. The covered ice rink Pokrito drsališče Šenčur is located in the Športni park Šenčur.
Nature
A well-maintained maple avenue runs along Pipanova cesta in Šenčur. Another avenue of birch and maple trees stands in front of the Šenčur cemetery. These distinctive rows of trees are also part of the visible townscape.
In the surrounding area, the Srjanska učna pot offers two options: a shorter route through flat terrain and a longer route over Srjanski hrib along existing forest paths. Sturdy footwear is recommended for the longer route. Rare bird species can also be observed in the surrounding area from an observation station on the edge of the lake; the island itself is not accessible to visitors.
Cycling
The traditional road cycling event Velika nagrada Šenčurja – Memorial Bojana Udoviča takes place in the centre of Šenčur and is held on a 1.3-kilometre circuit.
The final course of the 2026 European Road Cycling Championships starts and finishes in Šenčur. It passes through the municipalities of Preddvor and Cerklje na Gorenjskem below the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. In connection with the UEC European Road Cycling Championships, Šenčur will become a centre of European cycling from 2 to 7 October 2026.
