Krško: Culture, History and Hotels

Krško lies on both banks of Slovenia’s longest river and combines cultural heritage with an interactive world of energy, routes through the old town, and activities for cyclists and hikers. Krško can be reached via the motorway connection between Ljubljana and Zagreb.

Culture and History

Krško’s old town can be explored on foot or by bicycle. At the Valvasor Library in Krško, visitors can learn about the first Slovenian Bible translation, which is almost half a millennium old. The Capuchin Library of Krško also offers an insight into the town’s history: it is a museum library and cultural monument whose contents are accessible to the public under special conditions. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. The oldest book in the library is a Latin dictionary by Calepin from 1502.

The Mencinger House preserves a fruit-drying room established and maintained toward the end of the 19th century. It points to the importance of fruit growing for Krško and its surroundings. Another cultural and historical site is the Hočevar family mausoleum. Josipina Hočevar had it built as a family tomb after her husband’s death in 1886; today, it is considered a cultural monument of mature Neo-Gothic architecture. Guided tours take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Krško City Museum presents permanent exhibitions on Janez Vajkard Valvasor, Jospina Hočevar and Vladimir Štoviček. The museum also regularly hosts specialist lectures, creative workshops and other events. It is housed in a complex consisting of three buildings, including Krško’s oldest surviving structures; these were first built in the late 15th century. The Krško Gallery is located in the former Church of the Holy Spirit and presents temporary art exhibitions created specifically for this exhibition venue.

Technology and Places to Visit

Svet energije is an interactive multimedia visitor centre about energy and the energy sector. The centre includes an experimental room where visitors can independently explore experiments relating to electricity, electrical engineering, magnetism, electrostatics and electromagnetism. The Krško Nuclear Power Plant welcomes registered and organised visitors; the day of the visit must be arranged in advance with the public relations department. Visits include a presentation on the operation of the power plant, as well as a guided tour by bus or on foot.

Nature and Trails

The Krško destination has technically easy, well-maintained and marked hiking trails with up to 200 metres of elevation gain, which are particularly suitable for families with children. There are also moderately difficult hiking options in the low mountain range, including circular trails, multi-day long-distance hiking trails and one-day tours.

For shorter routes and cycling excursions, the Municipality of Krško operates the free bicycle rental system “Krčan” at 11 bicycle stations in various locations throughout the municipality. There are approximately 34 kilometres of cycling infrastructure in the municipality, enabling cyclists to participate more safely in traffic. The “Na Grmado” cycling tour starts in Krško, leads uphill to Sremič and onwards to Grmada, and starts and ends at the Krško PZA.

In the wider area around Krško, rowing is available on the slow-flowing Krka using rented kayaks, canoes or larger boats.
