Raka: Castle, Church and Wine Trail

Raka is home to the late Baroque St. Lawrence Church, built between 1799 and 1804 on the site of an older predecessor. It has two bell towers and a richly articulated façade. The church also contains a valuable Baroque organ front, transferred from the former monastery church in Kostanjevica na Krki.

Culture

Raka Castle is considered one of the oldest medieval castles in Slovenia. Visitors can see 34 rooms in the castle, all furnished with authentic interiors from the 17th to the 19th century. The castle is open year-round to larger groups who register in advance, and tours are offered in Slovenian, Croatian and English. The local tourism association can organise guided tours of Raka and its attractions.

The Kržan Farm has a long-standing tradition of producing ceramic objects. Visitors can try working at the potter’s wheel themselves.

The cultural attractions therefore differ in their character: the church and castle preserve architectural history and historic furnishings, while the Kržan Farm demonstrates the production of ceramic objects and allows visitors to work at the potter’s wheel themselves. When planning visits, sacred spaces, castle interiors and crafts thus remain recognisable as separate focal points.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

The Raka Wine Trail focuses on tasting local specialities from Raka and Cviček wine. It runs through the wine-growing hills around Raka and begins at Cvičkov hram, described as the first embassy of Cviček. In Jelenk, the trail includes a visit to the Žibert wine cellar. At the Cvičkov hram Vineyard Cottage in Raka, visitors are served Cviček with bacon and the indigenous onion variety raška č’bula.

Trails and Views

The Cavsar viewpoint offers expansive views over the area around Raka. The Cavsar Trail takes walkers between historic memorial markers. The Ladybird Learning Trail passes a pillory beside the path to Raka Castle, begins at the square by St. Lawrence Church and also ends there. On Vinji vrh, the trail leads to a chapel offering views across the entire Krško Basin, the Gorjanci Hills and the Kočevski-rog mountain range.

The attractions in Raka differ in character: the castle and church represent interiors, architectural history and sacred furnishings; the Wine Trail combines tastings with wine-growing hills; and the trails lead between memorial markers, a pillory and a chapel to various viewpoints. These features allow a day to be planned around culture, culinary experiences, crafts or landscape, without treating the individual attractions as equivalent.
