Hotels in Svibno – Forest Educational Trail and Castle Ruins in an Exceptional Cultural Landscape

The Church of the Holy Cross stands on a walled cemetery plateau between the settlement and the castle ruins. During its restoration in the 1980s, fragments of frescoes, Romanesque and Gothic windows, and a flat, decorated wooden ceiling were uncovered. The building thus combines several visible elements shaped by different artistic and architectural historical influences. A visit to the Church of the Holy Cross is possible by prior arrangement with KTRC Radeče or the Svibno parish office.

The history of the castle also reaches far back. The castle on Ostri vrh (Schärffenberg) has been mentioned in written sources since 1175. Svibno Castle was destroyed in the 17th century and left to decay. The written mention of Ostri vrh and the later decay of Svibno Castle therefore represent two different historical reference points. Both historical references are among the traces that connect the place with its past, without the individual testimonies having to be combined into a single story.

The Svibno forest educational trail combines recreation with learning about nature. It is marked with distinctive black-and-red markings in the shape of ladybirds. In total, the Svibno forest educational trail has 13 learning stations covering topics such as the forest, behaviour in the forest, animals, plants and the development of trees. The stations make different areas of knowledge about nature visible along the same route. The markings and learning stations are two different components of the trail: the former indicate its route, while the latter convey the topics mentioned above.

The entire landscape of Svibno is classified as an exceptional cultural landscape. A classic site where Kranjski šebenik is found is also located on the castle slope. Svibno therefore brings together historical traces, the surrounding landscape and a specifically named site, each with its own significance. The landscape designation refers to the entire area, while the site on the castle slope denotes one clearly named location.

The traditional cultural and tourism event Grajsko trški dan takes place in August. It presents Svibno’s heritage with a focus on the Ostrovrharji, activity at the market, and local culinary and craft offerings. The event therefore combines three explicitly named focal points: the Ostrovrharji, the market activity, and culinary and craft contributions from the local area.

The Radeška planinska pot also passes through Svibno. This route connection complements the individual places and events with a named link through the settlement, without equating it with the forest educational trail or the historical sites.
