Gabrje – Church, Ice Rink and Hotels
Gabrje brings three themes together: the protected townscape with its buildings, the ice rink during the winter months, and a cycling connection from Ljubljana. This gives the town clearly distinguishable facets – a church whose history reaches back to written records from the mid-16th century, sports facilities for various uses, and a connection whose construction was continued in the direction of Polhov Gradec.
Culture and History
At a crossroads of local roads north of the main road in the centre of Gabrje stands the Church of St. John the Baptist in Gabrje pri Dobrovi. The church is a late Baroque work by Lovrenc Prager. The church was already mentioned in written records from the mid-16th century. The village centre also has a designated protection status: Gabrje is protected as a settlement monument. In addition, Gabrje's crucifix shrine is protected as a cultural monument. Thus, the townscape brings together a named church, a protected village centre and another protected shrine, whose designations each mark different aspects of the architectural and historical heritage.
Winter
The ice rink in Gabrje is open during the winter months from November to February. It can be rented for training and recreational sports. In addition, ice-skating courses for children are offered there every year in the mornings. Under the guidance of instructors from the Mavrica club, the children learn the basics of moving on the ice in these courses. Alongside general use of the ice rink, this provides an organised training opportunity, recreational sports and a recurring annual course programme for children.
Further sports facilities are located at ŠRC Gabrje. New goals and ball-stop nets have been installed on the large football pitch. The smaller multi-purpose pitch received new artificial turf and a higher protective fence. The two pitches therefore differ both in their size and function and through the respective renovations mentioned.
Geographical Context
A cycling connection leads from Tržaška cesta in Ljubljana to the settlement of Gabrje in the municipality of Dobrova–Polhov Gradec. Construction work on the cycling connection was continued in the direction of Polhov Gradec. The connection is intended to lead to the address Gabrje 16. Thus, both the starting point at Tržaška cesta in Ljubljana and the settlement of Gabrje, the municipality of Dobrova–Polhov Gradec and the planned destination at the address Gabrje 16 are explicitly named.
