Skaručna: St. Lucia Church, landscape and routes to Šmarna gora
Skaručna combines a clearly recognisable settlement landscape with ecclesiastical tradition and rural cultural heritage. This combination gives the area several points of focus: historical traces, established landscape forms and routes towards Šmarna gora stand alongside one another here.
Landscape
Skaručna is a compact built-up settlement on the Vodice–Tacen road, extending across a terrace above the Poljšak stream in the southern, lower-lying part of the Skaruško polje. The settlement is characterised by farm buildings, gardens, orchards and fields divided into strips. Hayracks stand between the built-up area and the arable land; fields and woodland are found mainly to the north and west. The spatial arrangement of the built-up area, agricultural land and wooded areas therefore remains an essential part of the character of the settlement.
Culture
Jakob Alešovec was born in Skaručna on 24 July 1842. A central site in the local tradition is St. Lucia Church, which was built between 1662 and 1665 on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia. Its paintings date from 1748 and are attributed to Franc Jelovšek. Pilgrims and sick people came to the church, as Saint Lucia was believed to help with eye diseases. The pilgrimage to Saint Lucia reached its peak around the middle of the 18th century. Traditional pilgrimage gatherings are documented for the fourth Sunday after Easter and the Sunday after Saint James’ Day.
The Kužno znamenje is located between Skaručna and Povodje. It consists of a round column on a round base, supporting a four-sided chapel with semicircular openings. The Kužno znamenje probably dates from 1668. House names are also part of the area’s cultural tradition: they help preserve the local dialect and are regarded as intangible cultural heritage of rural areas. Skaručna was included in the first phase of the project on old house names in the Municipality of Vodice.
