Horjul: Nature, Culture and Hotels in the Horjul Valley

Horjul is located in the Horjul Valley, surrounded by picturesque natural scenery. Popular hiking trails lead from Horjul to the 788 m-high hill of Kožljek. Nature

The snake's head fritillary, also known as the chess flower or fritillary, grows in the marshy soils of the Horjul Valley and has the scientific name Fritillaria meleagris. The snake's head fritillary in the Horjul Valley is protected in Slovenia and included on the national Red List as an endangered species. Its exact designation and protection status are therefore just as much part of the valley's natural profile as the marshy soil in which it grows.

Culture

The Church of Saint Margaret is Horjul's parish church and its most important cultural and historical landmark. It was first mentioned in 1526. The presbytery contains frescoes by the painter Janez Šubic dating from 1877. Horjul Cemetery also features a Pietà relief by France Kralj from 1923. A surrounding wall built there was constructed according to Jože Plečnik's instructions.

An ethnological collection is open to the public in Horjul. It includes sections on handicrafts and crafts, firefighting, mountaineering, travel, schnapps distilling, fruit pressing, and rural life.

Walking and Activities

Horjul has a well-equipped sports center that has been operating for several years. The sports hall in Športni park Horjul can be used for sports training, competitions, and recreational sports by clubs, public institutions, organizations, private individuals, and businesses.

The cycling route from Horjul to Koreno is not marked; a map or GPX track is recommended for using it. The starting point of the Koreno hiking route can be reached nearby by LPP city bus 56. Two hiking trails branch off at Koreno: one leads uphill and the other downhill, creating a circular route.

Local Cuisine

At the Pr'Janš tourist farm in the village of Koreno, 4 km from Horjul, guests are offered homemade food. This includes preserved meat products, hot dishes, apple strudel, and Špehovka. Another local specialty is Horjulski piškoti, prepared according to a traditional local baking method.
