Rečica ob Savinji – Culture, Nature and Hotels

Rečica ob Savinji showcases history, nature and regional events at specific locations. The pillory stands in the middle of the market square. It is one of twelve surviving pillories in Slovenia and consists of a roughly two-metre-high stone pillar with a characteristic cover and an iron ring.

Culture and History

Tavčarjev dvor is a single-storey stone building in Rečica ob Savinji, constructed in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. In German documents, it is referred to as Tautscher Hof. The history of the Church of Saint Cantius also stretches far back: in 1173, the Patriarch of Aquileia, Udarlik, met there with numerous dignitaries. The present Church of Saint Cantius was almost entirely rebuilt after the fire of 1799. The parish of Rečica ob Savinji is dedicated to Saint Cantius, a martyr.

Several events draw on local and regional history. “Od lipe do prangerja” is a traditional tourism event and is one of the oldest events of its kind in the Upper Savinja Valley. Lenartov sejem is an event that revives memories of the former market atmosphere in the Upper Savinja Valley.

Nature and Landscape

Bohačeva lipa is listed under the name Turnškova lipa among natural features of local significance. The event “Večer pod trško lipo” takes place beneath its crown. Župnekovo žrelo is a cave that functions as an intermittent spring, or a spring shaft from which water emerges periodically. The site is easily accessible, and admission is free.

The Tesna Gorge lies near Dol–Suha. It is about 50 metres long, more than 10 metres deep and approximately 2 metres wide.

Activities

The Airurban flight school operates at the launch site and offers panoramic flights and tandem jumps. On the Savinja, water sports, kayaking and rafting are among the experiences available in Rečica ob Savinji. Another activity is offered by the paintball park near Borsečnik Farm. It is located at an altitude of 900 metres on the highest-lying farm in the municipality and covers 10,000 square metres.

Cycling and Regional Routes

Rečica ob Savinji holds the bronze Slovenia Green Destination label. On the Ljubljana–Kamnik–Ljubno/Rečica–Velenje route, the Slovenia Green Wellness Route passes through the Ljubno/Rečica section. On average, the route involves around 40 kilometres of moderate cycling per day on mixed surfaces; more than two-thirds of the route is paved. It can be explored in shorter sections, for example at weekends, with the help of rail connections.

Cuisine and Events

ŠtrukljiFest takes place every year on the last Sunday in August at the fire station grounds in Šentjanž/Grušovlje in Rečica ob Savinji. At the festival, visitors can sample various types of štruklji, and the event also features a varied cultural programme.
