Gornji Grad: Hotels, Culture and Trails

Gornji Grad is home to the Cathedral of St Hermagoras and Fortunatus. Measured by volume, it is the largest cathedral in Slovenia. This former late Baroque monastery church now serves as the parish church of Gornji Grad. Its elaborately designed interior features numerous paintings, frescoes, vaults and stone sculptures.
Culture
Štekl houses gallery rooms on the ground floor and museum collections on the upper floors. The Janez Mavrič Collection includes Zadrečka ceramics and Kokarski hats. The Janez Mavrič Collection is designated as a cultural monument of local importance. Prior arrangements are required to visit the museum collections of Gornji Grad.
Trails and Nature
The Attems Trail is a 2.4-kilometre, 45-minute circular route from the TIC via Spodnji trg and Podsmrečje and back to the TIC. It presents the history of the town centre of Gornji Grad and passes, among other places, the cathedral and a museum in the former defensive tower.
The trail to Počrevinov grič is 2.4 kilometres long, takes one hour and leads from the TIC to Počrevinov grič, where there is a viewpoint. From this viewpoint, all of Gornji Grad can be seen. A 7-kilometre pilgrimage trail connects the Cathedral of St Hermagoras and Fortunatus in Gornji Grad with the Church of Marija Zvezda in Nova Štifta.
The Gornji Grad–St Lenart–Veliki Rogatec mountain trail begins in Gornji Grad and ends at Veliki Rogatec. The trail is 9.12 kilometres long and takes 4 hours and 15 minutes one way. There is also a marked route from Gornji Grad via Semprimožnik to Dom na Menini planini. The highest point of Menina planina is Vivodnik at 1,508 metres; an observation tower stands there.
