Lucija: Cycling Tours, Culture and Water
Lucija combines outdoor activity, culture and water-related attractions in its local highlights. The focus is on clearly named cycling routes, the history of the salt pans, an experience for children and places by the water.
Cycling Tours
The challenging “Čez Istro za zahtevne (K13)” cycling tour is 83 km long. Its starting and finishing point is in Lucija. There is a gravel car park for this cycling tour in front of the marina in Lucija. In addition, Lucija has the Lucija pump track, a naturally shaped pump track made of earth and gravel with an area of 1,757 m².
The Parenzana also continues via the SeÄŤovlje salt pans to Lucija. The route is also called PoreÄŤanka. As a narrow-gauge railway between Trieste and PoreÄŤ, it operated from 1902 to 1935.
Culture
A special way to engage with the region’s history is the salt-making experience. It begins with a walk through Camp Lucija; the meeting point is at Children’s Park Sonce in Lucija. The experience introduces children to a 700-year-old tradition of salt production.
In the area around Lucija, Forma Viva comprises more than 130 stone sculptures. They were created by artists from more than 30 countries. Thus, the area brings together both the long tradition of salt production and an international collection of works in stone.
Nature
In the area around Lucija, the beach at Camp Lucija offers views of nearby salt pans and a nature reserve. Migratory birds can be observed in this nature reserve. The beach at Camp Lucija can be reached by bus from Lucija and is considered a popular starting point for stand-up paddleboarding.
The town’s maritime side includes Marina Portorož. Today, it has more than 1,000 berths. Marina Portorož was planned in 1974 as Slovenia’s first marina, on the foundations of the former salt pans of Lucija. The site’s earlier use is therefore also part of its history.
