At the mouth of the Dragonja River lie the Sečovlje Salt Pans. Salt is still harvested there by hand using a method that is several centuries old. The salt pans bring together ongoing salt production, historical evidence, nature observation, a museum and thalassotherapy. The ruins represent an earlier period of salt production, while hand harvesting is described as a method that is still practised today.

Culture and history

Fontanigge is home to the ruins of former salt workers’ houses, which are connected with medieval salt production. The Museum of Salt-Making is located in the Sečovlje Salt Pans, in the abandoned Fontanigge area on the Giassi Channel. It comprises four restored salt-pan houses. The exhibits illustrate the history of the salt pans and the way of life and work of the salt workers.

Nature

Salt-loving plants adapted to these conditions, known as halophytes, grow in the saline environment. So far, 296 species have been recorded in the Sečovlje Salt Pans Nature Park. A three-hour birdwatching programme is also offered in the Sečovlje Salt Pans.

Experiences

The guided tour of the Lera salt pans includes an approximately 2 km walk from the Lera entrance to the visitor centre and back. The distance information describes the route from the entrance to the centre and back again. The guided tour of the Sečovlje Salt Pans Nature Park presents the flora, fauna, cultural heritage and salt-production process. The visitor centre in Lera contains a large model of the salt pans as well as information about salt and the salt pans. The Sečovlje Salt Pans Nature Park has two land entrances; there is a car park at the Lera entrance.

Wellness

In the northern part of the Sečovlje Salt Pans Nature Park, Thalasso Spa Lepa Vida offers traditional outdoor thalassotherapy treatments using natural products from the salt pans. These include salt-pan mud packs, brine baths with Aqua Madre, salt scrubs and hand massages.
