Piran preserves a medieval urban structure with narrow streets and closely spaced houses. The old city wall consists of three rings of walls from different periods.

Culture
In the Fontanigge area at the Sečovlje salt pans, the Museum of Salt-making comprises four restored salt-pan houses. It presents the history of the salt pans as well as the life and work of the salt-pan workers. The Maritime Museum is located in the Gabrielli Palace at the port of Piran and preserves collections on maritime archaeology, the ethnology of fishing, and the art history of the maritime economy from the Middle Ages to the end of the Second World War.
St. George’s Church in Piran acquired its present appearance after a Baroque renovation in 1637. The Piran Aquarium was officially established in 1964 and presents the underwater world of the northern Adriatic with around 140 different species of organisms.
Nature
The Stjuža Lagoon is part of the saltwater wetlands of the Strunjan landscape and a remnant of the fish farming that was once widespread. The Sečovlje salt pans were recognized as a Ramsar site in 1993. More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the salt marshes of Sečovlje.
Traditional manual salt production in the Sečovlje salt pans is part of the cultural heritage of Mediterranean Slovenia. A guided tour of the Lera salt pans lasts at least 1.5 hours and covers a route of approximately 2 km; it presents the flora, fauna, cultural heritage, and salt production.
Trails
Strunjan Landscape Park can be visited on foot, by bicycle, or by public transport and is located next to the well-known Parenzana cycling route. The Piran walking path is 9 km long and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Strunjan walking path is 12 km long and runs along the edge of the highest cliff in the eastern Adriatic through a protected area of the landscape park near the salt pans.
The network of circular hiking trails in the Piran area includes routes through Piran, Portorož, Lucija, Seča, and Strunjan. The Coastal footpath is 18 km long and takes approximately four hours.
Events
The Salt-Makers’ Festival in Piran takes place every year in April. At the Salt-Makers’ Festival in Piran, visitors can try out traditional salt-production tools in workshops. The festival includes culinary offerings based on local salt.
