Discover Pivka: Nature, Wildlife and History
Pivka can be explored through its nature, trails and history. At the DINA Pivka centre, ten interactive stations provide fascinating information about bears, wolves and lynxes. Using virtual and augmented reality technologies, visitors can explore how animals and humans perceive the world, as well as animal tracks.
Nature and trails
The Pivška presihajoča jezera Landscape Park comprises 17 intermittent lakes spread across the entire Pivka Basin over an aerial distance of 15 kilometres. The Ekomuzej Pivških presihajočih jezer is a gateway to the landscape park and a starting point for hiking and cycling routes. Maps for the Velika Krpanova pot are available there. A mobile app guides visitors along trails between the Pivka Lakes.
The well-marked 91-kilometre Velika Krpanova pot hiking trail begins at Pivka railway station. The short Palška pot trail is also suitable for small children. For cycling, the Kolesarska pot gradov begins at the Park vojaške zgodovine.
At the Ekomuzej Pivških presihajočih jezer, the formation of the intermittent lakes is explained interactively: their distinctive geological structure and the uneven distribution of precipitation explain the characteristic interplay of the area.
Culture and history
The Park vojaške zgodovine Pivka is a museum and visitor centre on the site of the former Italian barracks in Hrastje pri Pivki. On display are an extensive collection of tanks and artillery, a collection of aircraft, the 33-110 steam locomotive from the Second World War, and the P-913 Zeta sabotage submarine. A themed educational trail leads from the Park vojaške zgodovine to the fortifications of the Alpski zid on the nearby Primož hill. During a guided tour of the underground fortification on Primož, visitors can see 500 metres of preserved underground tunnels.
Krpanov dom has a modern cinema with films for children and adults. The arthouse cinema programme at Kino Pivka is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. The Pivka House of Culture is the central gallery for contemporary visual art in the area between Ljubljana and Koper.
Stone crosses have been among the most enduring and striking features of Pivka’s cultural and landscape character from the 17th century to the present day. Parska golobina is one of the places with the oldest discovered traces of humans in Slovenia.
At Šobčeva domačija, traditional Brkini schnapps distilling is presented through an ethnographic collection and a short film. At Petrovi in Narin, visitors can take part in the “Od zrna do kruha” programme.
