Discover Stara Vas: Cultural Heritage, Film History and Cycling Routes
Stara Vas combines a clearly documented local history with registered cultural heritage and two distinct cycling narratives. In 1963, during the one-month filming of the movie “Noč vampirjev,” the village became a film village. This time-limited episode is part of the village’s public image, as are the surviving references to settlement, sacred architecture and archaeology.
Culture
The village center of Stara Vas is registered as immovable cultural heritage and a settlement monument area. The village is home to the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, which is registered as immovable cultural heritage in the category of sacred architecture. It is a branch church of the Postojna parish. Thus, both the settlement structure and a specific sacred building are central to the village center.
The Stara Vas archaeological site is also registered as immovable cultural heritage in the category of archaeology. A wooden model of Stara Vas is a typical example of a farming settlement in the Pivka area. The model adds an illustrative depiction of a farming settlement form to the view of the village, while the archaeological site points to the archaeological category.
Cycling
The Grajska kolesarska pot runs through Stara Vas. The route is 54 km long and has a total elevation gain of 1,300 meters. It combines active cycling with exploring the castle landscape around Postojna and passes five castles or their remains from different historical periods. Its route includes paved roads, gravel paths and cart tracks. Length, elevation gain, historical stops and the changing surface therefore represent several distinct features of the same route.
The Grajska kolesarska pot places Stara Vas within a broader historical landscape: the village lies along a route whose description includes both the sporting dimension and castles and their remains. The five named stops date from different historical periods; at the same time, the route remains diverse in terms of its surfaces, ranging from paved roads to gravel paths and cart tracks.
Another cycling tour, “Junior po junior,” passed through Stara Vas and then continued along a gravel path between the meadows surrounding the sports airfield. The tour was also suitable for children accompanied by their parents or legal guardians. In contrast to the Grajska kolesarska pot, the focus here is not on a long route with elevation gain and castle stops, but on the specifically described course through meadows and along a gravel path around the sports airfield.
The two route profiles offer different points of comparison. For the Grajska kolesarska pot, the combination of 54 kilometers, 1,300 meters of elevation gain, five historical stops and three types of paths is presented side by side. “Junior po junior” is described through the section passing through Stara Vas, the meadows surrounding the sports airfield and the gravel path. For choosing between the routes, distance, elevation profile, historical content and surface therefore remain separate criteria.
