Gorišnica: Cultural Heritage and Nature in Slovenia

Gorišnica is a place where cultural history, landscape and community spaces come together in various forms. The range extends from historic buildings and religious traditions to sports and events, as well as nature information along the Drava.

Culture and History

The Dominkova domačija is a particularly vivid example of traditional architecture. The house has an L-shaped layout and is made of wood and clay plaster, with a thatched roof. The original rooms and furnishings have been preserved inside. The Dominkova domačija is also considered the oldest fully preserved house in the Pannonian style and is more than 300 years old.

In 1989, the Dominkova domačija was declared a cultural monument of local significance and entered into the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage of Slovenia. Visits are possible daily by prior telephone arrangement. The current situation is different at the Sokova domačija: it is not yet set up for regular individual visits.

In the centre of Gorišnica stands the parish church of Saint Margaret of Antioch. It is considered one of the municipality’s most important cultural, historical and spiritual attractions. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages. The feast of Saint Margaret of Antioch is celebrated on 20 July, bringing believers and visitors together to this day and preserving the tradition of the parish church festival.

Memorial Site

The sculpture featuring a collection of cast-iron crosses in Gorišnica forms a distinctive connection between art, remembrance and community. It consists of 382 cast-iron crosses. The site is arranged around a circular path leading to a central composition. At the same time, it is the first comparable work by Franc Tobias and remains the only one that, in addition to its artistic value, also serves as a communal anonymous urn grave.

Sport and Leisure

The Športni Park Gorišnica is a central place for sports, recreation and community activities. Training sessions, competitions and events take place there. The park includes a grass football pitch, an athletics track, a secondary pitch, an outdoor fitness area, a children’s playground and a basketball court. This brings various forms of physical activity and communal recreation together in one place.

For visitors, the Športni Park Gorišnica has a large paved car park, providing easy and convenient access. Preparatory matches and various local sporting events are held there regularly.

Landscape and Nature

Gorišnica lies on both sides of the canal of the Formin hydroelectric power plant. At the same time, the settlement is located in the floodplain of the Pesnica River. The fertile plain around Gorišnica is characterised by arable land and meadows; smaller patches of woodland lie between the settlements. These landscape features shape the character of the surrounding area, although the plain is not exclusively agricultural in nature.

The DRAVA-NATURA 2000 interpretation point in Gorišnica is one of the nature interpretation units along the Drava and the Drava Cycle Route. It explains the importance of native plant species and the problems caused by plantations of non-native trees. Visits to the DRAVA-NATURA 2000 interpretation units, including the Gorišnica point, are free of charge.
