Discover Majšperk: Hotels, History and Trails in the Dravinja Valley
Majšperk combines historical heritage with trails around Lake Sestrško jezero and in the Dravinja Valley. The town’s story spans ecclesiastical history dating back to the Middle Ages, museums and Hamre Manor, as well as an educational birdwatching trail. The regional development of cycling, educational and hiking trails is also part of this picture.
History and Culture
The name Majšperk derives from the medieval Mansberg Castle. The Church of Saint Nicholas in Majšperk was first mentioned in 1261. The present building is believed to date from 1639 and was renovated in 1929. Thus, alongside the history of the name, a specific sacral building is also central to the town’s history.
In the municipality, the Breg Gallery offers free exhibition visits every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visits are also possible during the municipal administration’s opening hours by prior arrangement. Organized groups may also visit the gallery outside regular hours by prior agreement. Also in the municipality, the Museum of Wool and Tapestries preserves memories of the former textile industry in the Podravje region; it is open to visitors by prior registration.
Among the architectural heritage is Hamre Manor, a single-storey, rectangular building with a Baroque façade. Attached to it is a chapel tower with stucco decorations and a Baroque room fountain. In Naraplje, the village mill was restored by local residents under the auspices of the Naraplje Tourism Association. Today, it is running again beside the rushing water. The local music event “V Majšperku pojemo in igramo po domače” took place in Majšperk on 23 October 2022 and 29 October 2023.
Nature and Trails
At Lake Sestrško jezero, there is a walking trail that leads along the eastern side to the kozolec in Sestrže and to the gallery of painter Branko Gajšta. This trail is complemented by an educational birdwatching trail. Thus, the explicitly mentioned activities at the lake include both walking and learning about the local birdlife.
The shared geographical location, natural heritage, and similar history and cultural background of the municipalities of Makole, Majšperk and Poljčane formed the basis for developing cycling, educational and hiking trails in the Dravinja Valley. The Municipality of Majšperk also provides two Cube e-bikes for hire. Key collection and the necessary formalities are handled at the municipal office at Majšperk 39.
