Hotels in Lovrenc na Pohorju – Nature Trails, Churches and the Lovrenška jezera

A marked hiking trail from Lovrenc na Pohorju to the Lovrenška jezera begins near the Church of St. Lawrence. The lakes lie in a peat bog in the Pohorje range between Planika at 1,391 metres and Mulejev vrh at 1,533 metres. The headwaters of the Radoljna, Mislinja and Velka streams are also located there. Depending on the current water level, there are between 11 and 22 small lakes.

Nature and trails

The Ruta forest educational trail is approximately three kilometres long and runs through the Štiblerjev vrh forest reserve. For cyclists, Pohorje Cycling Route 4 begins in Lovrenc na Pohorju; the route is 44.3 kilometres long. Local cycling tours begin in front of the tourist information office. Fly-fishing is also possible in the Radoljna stream with a day fishing permit.

Churches and local history

The parish church of St. Lawrence is first mentioned in 1184. The present church was built in 1765–1766 as an almost entirely Baroque church. Its rich Baroque furnishings include works by the Maribor sculptor Jožef Holzinger; the interior was repainted in 1892.

Lovrenc na Pohorju is also home to the present-day branch church of the Holy Cross, a late Baroque church dating from 1659. A fragment of a fresco depicting Mary and John the Evangelist has been preserved in the church. Ladejenkovo is considered the oldest house in Lovrenc and is approximately 500 years old. The farmhouse, built entirely of wood, dates from the 15th century.

The sacred history of the surrounding area also includes the branch church of St. Ignatius at Rdeči Breg and the Church of the Virgin Mary in Puščava. St. Ignatius was built around 1750, and its main altar was created by Jožef Straub. In Puščava, a Renaissance church forms the core of the building. The marked trail from Lovrenc to St. Ignatius takes approximately two hours to reach the church.

The Baroque stone statue of St. Nicholas was created by Jožef Straub in 1754. The Pajštva is a preserved Pohorje fruit-drying facility more than 100 years old, where fruit and flax were dried.

Local activities

During Jezernikovi dnevi, visitors can learn about the life of bees and beekeeping at Čebelarski dom and sample bee products. Čebelarski dom and the bee educational trail can be visited by prior arrangement with the beekeepers’ association. The local herbal association sells herbal teas, tinctures, ointments and other herbal products.

“Žvancanje” is an activity involving visits to cultural and historical sights in Lovrenc. It is organised by the Lovrenc na Pohorju Tourist Association; prior contact is required. Nine labyrinths were created in 2013 by Kmetija Sožitje on the grounds of Nebesni labirinti in Činžat. A small museum of old farming tools can be visited by prior registration.

The surrounding area includes a public climbing area with equipped climbing routes graded from 3 to 7c. Climbing is carried out with your own equipment and at your own risk.
