Smolnik: Nature along the Lobnica and Hotels

Smolnik combines the course of the Lobnica with natural landscapes, historic buildings, and paths through the Pohorje. After flowing through a narrow valley, the stream reaches the plain near Smolnik. The hidden canyon of Lobnica and Verna lies in Smolnik’s deep gorge. Along the stream, there is also a 19-hectare area of untouched Pohorje primeval forest.

Nature and Trails

The Pot ob potoku Lobnica trail leads to the Veliki Šumik waterfall. Smolnik’s landscape includes the stream’s narrow valley, the deep gorge with the Lobnica and Verna canyon, the Pohorje primeval forest, and the path to the waterfall.

Culture and History

The railway viaduct is located in the western part of Ruše, in Smolnik. It is one of three surviving structures of its kind along the Koroška Railway and is classified as a technical monument. High on the slope in the hamlet of Hlebovo in Smolnik stands St. Mary’s Church. It was built between 1859 and 1861. The church interior features a central domed room surrounded by pilasters.

The historical landscape along the Lobnica also includes the Lobniška riža. It was a 17-kilometre-long waterway in the Lobnica valley used to transport timber downstream. Along the Lobnica, it was built in 1874 over a length of 5,728 metres. The remains of the so-called Turkish Wall in Smolnik are made of rubble stone. During the Turkish incursions, locals sought shelter behind these remains. Another defensive wall, the Dravska kljuža, is already mentioned in historical sources in 1147.

Cycling Route and Other Places

Smolnik is also connected to a larger cycling route: the Pohorje Cycling Route from Belvi via Areh and Šumik reaches Smolnik and then continues to Ruše. Other places within the same overarching destination are Kumen, Lovrenc na Pohorju.

Local Offerings and Announced Event

Stara ribogojnica Smolnik serves roasted and fried trout. A sketch comedy evening entitled “Hanzekov večer” was announced at Gasilskem domu Smolnik for 29 November 2025. Posestvo Šumik rents out the main house and its associated grounds to groups of up to 15 guests.
