Breginj: Mountain Landscape, Culture and Hotels

In Breginj, Stol rises as a narrow, elongated mountain. Its 1,673-meter-high summit is located in the Breginjski kot at the border between the Julian Alps and the Alpine foothills. Stol is also a launch site for paragliding. A path leads from Breginj to this mountain; the route takes about three hours and is a marked, partly challenging hiking trail.

Mountain Landscape

North of Breginj, Mount Muzec lies in the Stol mountain range and reaches 1,612 meters. It is also called Musc and is referred to as Mali Muzec on maps. Muzec offers beautiful views of the Julian Alps and their foothills. The Bivak is located on Muzec; it is permanently open and intended for mountain hikers.

Hiking and Cycling

The route from Breginj to Stol takes approximately three hours and is designated as a marked, partly challenging hiking trail. Cycling in the Breginjski kot is particularly suitable for mountain bikes. Thus, both the route to Stol and a designated form of cycling are central to exploring the landscape around Breginj.

Culture

The Breginj Museum is an architectural and ethnological monument. The old village center of Breginj is the only preserved part of the original village layout. With its museum, the Church of St. Nicholas and the rectory, it is classified as a national cultural monument. Kotarski dnevi is a traditional local event in the Breginj area.

The Stol 1915–1917 War Collection mainly displays objects from Stol that document the events along this section of the front. The ethnological-military collection in Breginj includes a reconstructed hearth with all the objects belonging to the kitchen. This collection also displays remnants of weapons and personal belongings of soldiers who fought on the Soča Front.
