Bovec: Soča, Mountains and Outdoor Experiences

Bovec lies on the edge of Triglav National Park and is surrounded by the high peaks of the Julian Alps. The town is a centre for outdoor activities.

Nature and Trails

The Soča Trail runs through Triglav National Park along the Soča from its source to Bovec. Its starting point can be reached by seasonal public transport. Along the way, the trail connects quiet sections of the Soča with the Trenta Valley. The Soča Valley also has several hiking and walking trails. The Vodenca Jablanca walking trail is 7.7 km long and takes around two hours, while the walking trail along the Glijun stream is 7.4 km long and also takes around two hours. The Zavrzelno walking trail is 8.2 km long and takes around three hours.

The network of trails in the region also includes the Juliana Trail, a 270 km long long-distance hiking trail around the Julian Alps. Stage 13 leads from Kobarid to Bovec and is 21.3 km long. The various routes therefore range from walking trails with a stated duration of around two hours to an individual long-distance trail stage of more than 20 kilometres.

Activities on the Water and in the Surrounding Area

Rafting, hydrospeed and kayaking are offered on the Soča and Koritnica rivers in Bovec. Canyoning is offered in the area of the Sušec stream. Paragliding is also available as an activity in Bovec. Bovec and its surroundings also offer opportunities for road cycling and mountain biking. Alongside the hiking trails, the waters and wider surroundings of the town therefore provide options for several different sports.

History and Landscape

Kluže Fortress is located 4 km from Bovec in the direction of the Predel Pass. Beneath the fortress is a well-preserved, 400-metre-long tunnel dating from before the Second World War, which can be visited as part of guided tours. Kluže Fortress also has a permanent exhibition.

The Čelo Open-Air Museum is part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic and offers views over the Bovec Basin. It can be reached via a mountain trail from the village of Kal-Koritnica. The starting point is on the road between Bovec and Trenta, around 3 km from Bovec. The Boka Waterfall is also clearly visible from the road between Bovec and Žaga. To the right of the bridge, a well-marked path leads to a viewpoint in about 15 minutes.

The restored building of the Ravni Laz dairy is located on the road between Bovec and Ravni Laz and now serves as a tourist and museum site. Around 600 soldiers who fought on the Isonzo Front are buried in the military cemetery near Bovec.

Regional Specialities

Bovški krafi are a local sweet made with Bovec pears. Locals traditionally ate them on Christmas Eve. The cheese is made from raw sheep's milk; up to 20% may be supplemented with cow's or goat's milk. The cheese has protected designation of origin status.
