Logje – History, Nadiža Gorge and Napoleon Bridge

Logje is a secluded settlement near the border on a semicircular terrace high above the Nadiža. The village lies below the 598-metre-high Sleme hill and combines a striking river landscape with diverse traces of history.

Culture

Near Logje, the stone, stepped Napoleon Bridge spans the narrow Nadiža Gorge. It was built around 1812, is an architectural monument and is regarded as a link to the past. An old route from Pradol and Robidišče continued along the Nadiža via the bridge. The hiking trails in the area also include the Napoleon Bridge–Logje trail.

Several characteristic Breginj-style houses in Logje were rebuilt in the traditional style after the 1976 earthquake. The village is home to the Church of Saints Primus and Felicianus. Logje is mentioned in writing as early as 1170 under the name Logre. Together with Ahtno Castle (Attimis) in Friuli, Logje was transferred to the Church of Aquileia.

Nature

West of Logje lies the Nadiža Gorge, which is designated as a natural asset of national importance under ID 777. The Nadiža bathing area (Logje – below the bridge) is designated as a bathing area for 2025.

History

Gradec lies near Logje at the confluence of the Nadiža and the Legrado stream and can be reached from the south via a longer saddle. Gradec bears monument number EŠD 5026 in the Slovenian heritage register. A fibula found at Gradec provides evidence of settlement in the 6th century; Gradec can therefore be interpreted as a Late Antique refuge.

Routes

The Breginjski kot cycling route passes through Logje and descends to the Nadiža. It is 41 kilometres long, takes around four to five hours and has 1,050 metres of elevation gain. The route leads to the picturesque gorges of the Nadiža, the stepped Napoleon Bridge and bathing pools. Different modes of transport and the clearly specified route data provide an objective basis for comparing hiking and cycling tours by length, duration and thematic focus.

Particularly with a budget-conscious travel plan, these factors reveal different degrees of financial and organisational flexibility. Choosing a hotel therefore remains a separate decision alongside the cultural, natural and route-related aspects of the stay.

Surroundings

The mountains Monte Lubia, Monte Spich and Monte Mia are located in the immediate vicinity of Logje. The surrounding area also includes Mount Stol, the ruins of Castello di Soffumbergo and the Church of Sv. Volar. Further afield in the region are the Museo archeologico nazionale and the Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo.

The Last Contemporary Art Museum presents sculptures, installations, paintings, videos and other works of art. During this period, the museum also offers a small museum shop, workshops, concerts and video screenings.
