Discover Tolmin: Hotels, Gorges and Cultural History

Tolmin combines striking natural landscapes with tangible cultural history. The Tolmin Gorges is the collective name for the gorges of the Tolminka and Zadlaščica rivers. At 180 m above sea level, they are also the lowest point in Triglav National Park.

Nature

An easy circular trail with steps and railings leads through the Tolmin Gorges. The route includes both a descent and an ascent, as well as sections that partly run along a road. A 1,250 m long walking path also connects the outskirts of Tolmin with the area of the gorges. The terrain is easy; the path is suitable for walkers and hikers of all ages and takes about 15 minutes on average.

A running route of less than 10 kilometres and not particularly demanding follows the Soča and Tolminka rivers and circles Tolmin. The confluence of the Soča and Tolminka is recommended as the starting point. Tolmin also has a permanently marked running route, which is considered Slovenia’s first permanently marked running route.

Culture and History

The ruins of what was once the most important castle in the Tolmin area stand on Kozlov Rob. The castle ruins are designated as a cultural monument and have been maintained as a viewpoint since the 1990s. From there, the view extends across the Tolmin Basin and the surrounding hills. At the Kozlov Rob Interpretation Centre, the history of the castle is presented in a multimedia „Immersive Room“.

Kozlov Rob also has a renovated trim trail with outdoor fitness equipment and wooden exercise elements. A playfully guided experience there is aimed primarily at families. Guided tours along the route of the three castles combine a walk with an introduction to the cultural heritage of Kozlov Rob, the Coronini Palace and the Patriarch’s Court in Dvor na Doru.

The German Ossuary near Tolmin is a cultural-historical and architectural monument built in 1938. In its chapel, the names of fallen soldiers are displayed on oak panels and in mosaic inscriptions; the tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in the burial chamber. The ossuary stands on the left bank of the Soča in the immediate vicinity of Tolmin. The road there leads from Tolmin for approximately 1 km past the school centre.

The interior of the German Ossuary can be visited from Tuesday to Friday between 10:00 and 15:00 by prior arrangement with the Tolmin Museum. Groups can request a guided tour in advance. The Tolmin Museum is located in the former Coronini Palace in the centre of Tolmin. Its permanent exhibition „The Soča Region Historical Deposits“ presents archaeological finds from Most na Soči, particularly from the Early Iron Age. The ethnological and historical section of the exhibition covers the Great Tolmin Peasant Revolt of 1713.

Routes and Sightseeing

Javorca can also be reached from Tolmin by following a clearly described route: Follow the signposts; behind the village of Zatolmin, a 7 km long, narrow gravel road with passing places begins. This road is suitable only for passenger cars. From the car park below Javorca, a 15- to 20-minute uphill walk then leads to the Church of the Holy Spirit.
