Kobarid offers several concrete ways to explore the town and its surroundings: The Bovec–Kobarid section of the Walk of Peace ends in the centre of Kobarid. In addition, the Kobarid Historical Trail is a five-kilometre hiking trail leading to historical, cultural, archaeological and natural sights in the immediate vicinity of Kobarid.

Water and Trails

The Soča is associated with two different activities offered by the Kobarid Kayak School. The school offers rafting on various sections of the Soča. In Kobarid, its programme also includes whitewater kayaking lessons on the Soča.

A cycle path also follows a river: The cycle path along the Nadiža from Kobarid via Robič to Podbela is one of the routes whose accessibility, maintenance and signage are ensured by the municipality. The route lists Kobarid, Robič and Podbela in that order.

Culture and History

The Kobarid Museum presents the 12th Battle of the Isonzo Front, also known as the “Miracle of Kobarid”. The collection is spread across twelve rooms on two floors. A multimedia room shows a short film about the Isonzo Front that describes the 12th Battle of the Isonzo Front in greater detail. The Kobarid Museum also received the Council of Europe Museum Prize.

The historical heritage presented along the Kobarid Historical Trail ranges from prehistory to the period after the Second World War. The Italian Charnel House provides another link to the history of war. It contains the remains of more than 7,100 soldiers who fell in the Upper Soča region during the First World War.

The historical ethnological collection “Od planine do Planike” focuses on the Alpine heritage. It presents the heritage of mountain pastures and the tradition of cheesemaking in the Soča region. At the same time, the collection conveys the heritage of mountain pastures and Alpine livestock farming through ethnological exhibits, a documentary film and a reconstruction of a mountain pasture hut with complete equipment for milk processing.

Landscape

Slap Kozjak, also called Veliki Kozjak, is the highest waterfall on the Kozjak stream and is 15 metres high. It can be reached via a purpose-built footpath.

Regional Cuisine

At the Cheese Museum Kobarid, the dairy organises cheese and other dairy product tastings, as well as an Alpine farmers’ meal for private groups, by prior reservation. The local sweet speciality is kobariški štruklji, sweet dumplings filled with walnuts and raisins.
