Volče: Churches, Hiking Trails and Hotels

In Volče, ecclesiastical history meets several specifically described hiking routes. The present-day Church of Sv. Danijel in Volče dates from the 16th century and is freely accessible. The Church of Sv. Lenart was first mentioned in 1459. The documented history of the two churches therefore reaches back to different historical periods.

Culture

The building history of Sv. Lenart is also associated with several dates. The church was extensively renovated in 1695; after suffering severe damage in the First World War, it was renovated again in 1921 under the direction of the parish priest at the time, Alojzij Kodermac. The frescoes in the Church of Sv. Danijel also date from the 16th century and are attributed to Jernej of Loka.

The parish calendar of Volče includes the feast day of Saint Lenart on 6 November. It is celebrated with 24-hour adoration before the evening Mass. In the wider area around Volče, the most important pilgrimage gathering takes place in Mengore on the Sunday after 8 September.

Hiking Trails

A recommended circular hike to Bučenica follows the Walk of Peace to the outskirts of Volče, where it turns towards Bučenica. The Bučenica circular hike is 8.7 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours. Its route leads from the saddle between Mengore and Bučenica down to Volče along the Walk of Peace and then back to the starting point. The stated length and duration provide a specific framework for this circular route without changing the route described.

The fifth stage of the Walk of Peace also includes Volče in its route. It leads from the Soča Bridge along a paved road towards the civil cemetery of Volče. The return route follows the same road to the civil cemetery of Volče and then continues into the village. From Volče, the fifth stage of the Walk of Peace follows the signs towards Kolovrat.

Another connection is provided by stage 11 of the Juliana Trail. It leads along a forest path above the Soča River to the first house in the village of Volče and then continues to Tolmin. Between Most na Soči and Tolmin, this stage is a moderately difficult hike covering 8.1 kilometres and taking about three hours.

There are public transport connections for stage 11 of the Juliana Trail. It is considered suitable for public transport; bus connections run from Ljubljana, Nova Gorica and Bovec via Most na Soči and Tolmin. Thus, in addition to the forest path above the Soča, the stage is also associated with a specifically named connection via these places.
