Srpenica: Soča Gorge, Hiking Trails and Culture

Srpenica brings water, trails and history together in a confined area. The Sušec Gorge is located near Srpenica in the Soča Valley. Over thousands of years, water has carved natural slides, pools and narrow passages into the limestone. This connection with the landscape is complemented by trails leading to a long suspension bridge, a canyoning entry and exit point, and historic sites around the settlement.

Water and Trails

Rafting trips on the Soča usually begin at Boka Waterfall or near the village of Srpenica and continue to the village of Trnovo ob Soči. When canyoning in the Sušec Gorge, the individual waterfalls can be jumped or safely bypassed on land. The Srpenica 2 entry and exit point is located in the Municipality of Bovec.

Hiking and Landscape

Near Srpenica, the Boka–Lipuc hiking trail reaches the 61 m long Lipuc footbridge. It is considered the longest suspension bridge over the Soča. From the Boka–Lipuc Trail, an approximately 300 m long detour leads to the right to the canyoning entry and exit point on the Sušec stream. The Boka–Lipuc circular hiking trail also passes Srpenica; the village centre with its village church can be reached from the trail in just a few steps.

The popular Juliana Trail circular route runs along the slopes of the Julian Alps and through Triglav National Park to Brda and Nova Gorica.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Florian stands in the centre of Srpenica. The church dates from 1755. About 1 km before the settlement lies the Ograjenca archaeological site, where an urn burial was confirmed during the excavation. The site is located on a prehistoric route that connected the Tolmin and Bovec areas with Carinthia and had already been in use since the Bronze Age.

Alongside Bovec, the cemetery at Srpenica is one of the sites regarded as the northernmost sites of the Svetolucian culture. A stone cross near Srpenica commemorates Countess Lucy Christalnigg, who is described as the first civilian victim of the First World War in the Soča Valley. The Lucy Christalnigg monument, a stone cross on the Bovec–Kobarid regional road (R1–203), is located approximately 1 km beyond Srpenica. It is open and freely accessible at all times.
