Culture

The Bahçallëk Bridge crosses the Drin River and is listed in the cultural monuments register of Shkodër County as a Category II cultural monument. An ancient house with a mosaic on the right bank of the Drin near the Bahçallëk Bridge is listed as a Category I cultural monument. The exact location on the river and the respective monument categories are among the key characteristics of these two structures.

History

The old five-arched Bahçallëk Bridge was built by Mehmet Pashë Bushati in 1768. It connected the Bahçallëk and Tabakë neighborhoods and was one of Shkodër’s historic overland links with other parts of Albania. During Ottoman rule, a toll was charged for crossing the Bahçallëk Bridge; at night, it could be crossed only in emergencies. Different conditions therefore applied to crossings during the day and at night.

Flooding destroyed Bahçallëk’s old stone arch bridge in 1880. A metal bridge was built near the old stone arch bridge in 1914 by an Austrian planner. This sequence of events makes the bridge site legible as the setting of several construction phases.

Religious Evidence

The Mosque of Mehmet Pashe Bushatlliu is located in the Bahçallek neighborhood and was completed in 1773–1774. It is considered the only surviving building in Shkodër constructed during the Ottoman period. Xhamia e Plumbit is a Category I cultural monument.

Connections

A bus route runs from Bahçallek through the center to Fermentim and back. The route provides a connection in both directions and passes through the center.
