Grilë on Lake Shkodra: Nature, Shoreline and Cultural Heritage

Grilë is designated as a bathing and recreation area on Lake Shkodra. The lake extends into the Vraka-Gril area and combines a protected landscape with a multifaceted cultural history. Here, visitors encounter shoreline, nature observation, regional cuisine and evidence of various religious traditions.

Lake Shkodra

Lake Shkodra, which extends to the Vraka-Gril area, was added to the Ramsar List in 2005. The Albanian zone of the lake, which also extends to the Vraka-Gril area, is designated as a managed nature reserve. Its ecosystem is home to hundreds of plant and animal species. Lake Shkodra also possesses exceptional ecological, landscape and sociocultural values and was included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves for this reason.

In the Malësi e Madhe area, the section of Lake Shkodra from Vraka-Gril to Han i Hotit stretches for around 30 km. The lake offers opportunities for fishing and is home to more than 200 bird species; it is also suitable for birdwatching. Pygmy cormorants breed in the marshy north of Lake Shkodra. At the northern end of the lake, Dalmatian pelicans nest on floating peat islands.

Culture

Grilë is one of the villages on the shores of Lake Shkodra where Albania’s Montenegrin minority lives. The Montenegrin minority in the villages of the Vraka region around Grilë has preserved its language, culture, religion and traditions. In Shkodër, the Morača-Rozafa Association of the Serbian-Montenegrin Minority was founded in 1991 to preserve religious, national and cultural identity.

Several churches connect the area with its historical and religious heritage. In Grilë, the remains of the Church of Saint Petka from the historic Vraka area have been documented. The Church of St. Vračeva is located in the historic Vraka area beside Lake Shkodra. The cathedral church of the Vrača community, the Church of the Holy Mother of God in Mladi Borič, was built in 1869. Every year on January 7, a traditional service in the Montenegrin language is held at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Vrakë.

Shoreline and Cuisine

The lakeside area near Grilë is considered a place with daily activity and several local establishments. The gastronomic offerings at the lake near Grilë include the preparation of fish, particularly carp, eel and trout from Lake Shkodra as well as from the Cem River. This keeps the cuisine closely connected to the surrounding waters, without requiring a larger gastronomic infrastructure.

Getting There

A minibus from Shkodër to Lake Shkodra Resort passes through Grilë and stops at the junction for Omaraj and the resort; from there, it is about a 900 m walk. The fare is 100 lek per person. The access road to Lake Shkodra Resort passes through Grilë and over the railway bridge. After that, depending on the route, continue either for about 0.9 km on an asphalt road to the lake or for about 1 km on a single-lane gravel road.

Lake Shkodra Resort offers canoe, pedal boat, bicycle and SUP board rentals on site, as well as cycling routes and maps. The resort is listed at Rruga E Liqenit, Grile / Omaraj, 4001 Grilë, Albania. It is located about 100 m from a sandy and gravel beach.
