The landscape around Nicaj-Shalë itself is characterized by a mountain backdrop and lush vegetation.

Things to Do

Hikes to viewpoints are among the possible activities in Nicaj-Shalë. The river also appears in several documented contexts: in one report, the upper section of a paddling tour on the Shala ended at Nicaj-Shalë, while the river section described there below Nicaj-Shalë was 8 kilometers long. A field report also describes Nicaj-Shalë as the only “village” in the valley.

Trails and Connections

The Shala River is one of two described main access routes in the area between Shkodra and Theth. One of the described main ways to access the landscape around Nicaj-Shalë is a boat trip across Lake Koman. In addition, an east-west connection begins in the village of Kir, leads over the Kir Pass and continues in the direction of the Shala Valley. A documented connection from Breglumi (Nicaj Shala) to the Kir Pass also runs along the Shala Valley.

A published route through the Albanian Alps leads from Theth via Nicaj-Shalë to Lotaj. Another described connection from Vuksanaj to Nderlysaj passes through the villages of Pjolla, Nicaj-Shales, Dednikaj, Rrethi and Palna e Trasit. The onward journey via Nicaj, Lotaj and Kir is described as challenging even for an off-road vehicle.

Culture

Only a few remains of the Shën Premte Church survive today, including dry-stone masonry foundations. The path to the ruins of Shën Premte Church is still marked by wooden crosses. Historical explanations of Padre Gaspari’s 1671 map place the ruins of a church called San Prende by the locals between Nicaj and Pecaj. The feast day of Shën Premte is celebrated on July 25.

In the wider regional surroundings of Nicaj-Shalë, the Kisha “Sh. Shtjefni” church in Breg Lumi is assigned to the Shalë-Dukagjin parish. The ecclesiastical traces thus extend from the few surviving foundations at Shën Premte to a church assigned today in the wider regional surroundings.
